I've developed some sort of mental illness that involves not listening to new CDs... I've got Gomory, the Song Project live, and a bunch more sitting in a pile waiting for me... maybe this weekend I'll crack some open.

Huh, good point. I've always been vague about how many members an ensemble can change before Zorn changes the name of the ensemble, but taking the guitarists out of Abraxas seems to me to change it into something else. Mind you, that trio would be interesting to hear in its own right, certainly. And just like that, the name of the ensemble has changed on the Stone's website... maybe they are reading your posts.

Note that the Abraxas lineup listed has no guitars, so it could be quite a different sound than we've heard previously, and probably not much like Simulacrum and Asmodeus. (Unless they just left the guitarists out of the listing by accident or something...)

You are just going to have to pack up and move to New York, like I did!

JZ is doing a summer Sunday afternoon series at the Stone with the new book of 250 tunes he's written since March. (You'd be laughing right now if this were any other composer, I know.) There are some great bands and musicians lined up to play as usual. Full listing is compiled here: john-zorn.blogspot.com/2015/05/bagatelles.htmlAt some point between my job and all the must-see NYC concerts I will no longer have time to sleep or eat... ;-)

Haven't heard anything about it... Aleph Trio? Bladerunner? Who knows...

Oh, that's great! :-) I ended up going to the Merkin Hall show which was excellent, but it sounds like you made the right choice.
I almost came to the late set for MMD (ran into a friend at Merkin who had a spare 10:30 ticket...) but I decided I was going to really regret it if I was out past midnight six nights in a row during my deadline week at work. I needed a break. I ended up seeing 10 sets at the Vanguard, the show at Merkin Hall, one set at the Stone and a 3-hour show at the Beacon in nine days. I was so exhausted by last night that I was asleep about an hour after eating dinner...

All of the shows were great, but I was kind of surprised that my favorite of the week (including Sunday at the Stone and Thursday at Merkin Hall, 'cause why not) was the Asmodeus/Valentine's Day set. Holy cow, was that an intense set! I was not expecting to like it that much because the Enigmata/V-Day stuff is kind of difficult, and while I like Asmodeus, I don't think it even cracks the top ten of my favorite BoA albums. But they just hit it out of the park... I remember after the first piece ended I had to turn around and exchange a wide-eyed "HOLY SHIT!" kind of facial expression with the friends sitting behind me.

Sarah - I'm jealous. It's going to be a storming set. Yeah, it'll be a crazy night. Zorn/Graves first set, Ribot/Sorey/Dunn second set. Wheeee!

Since it came out I've been trying to compare the tunes on each record together, but with no real success! I'm still curious as to how Valentine's Day was put together though. Did Tyshawn Sorey just have Enigmata to work from and constructed his part solely around that album, or did Ribot and Dunn re-record their parts from scratch live with TS? I'd be curious to know. I was wondering the same thing. We'll be seeing some of Valentine's Day live tomorrow night, which should be quite an adventure. Ribot did a radio interview recently and sounded a little anxious about it... I don't blame him!

Everything except Thursday evening and the Sunday matinee. I've been leaning towards seeing the Merkin Hall performance on Thursday, but I'm going to see how I'm feeling later in the week.

Yes, some of them have been sold out for weeks. (And some of them are sold out if you click through even though it's not marked 'sold out' - I think there are seven sold out sets now.) They've sold much faster than last time, I guess because a lot of people found themselves shut out in September when they waited too long.
Also very excited here :-)

I've fallen behind on keeping my list current, but I thought some of you would like this one - a new project from Jon Madof with Mathias Kunzli, Shanir Blumenkranz and Brian Marsella: kck.st/1DuVnjP

Ah, I remember you! Not sure I will recognize you, but I remember :-) The guy you were sitting next to (Mike) will be there too.
The first Zorn concert I ever saw (which was also the first jazz concert I ever saw) featured Electric Masada, and I've never been the same...
