This Buer, Book of Angels vol 31, seems very interesting. I wonder if Marsella's trio will invent something as diverse and funny as Rob Burger's 2002 Lost Photograph (highly recommended). Their bagatelles performances were some of the best of the series (IMO), so I have high hopes. Though I wouldn't necessarily expect anything like Lost Photograph... who knows? They are doing the Buer live premiere at the Stone on my birthday That will make party planning quite easy.

Do you think we'll get BOA Vol 32? Yes!

Since it's the penultimate volume, I wonder what comes next ... #31 has been recorded with a trio of Brian Marsella, Kenny Wollesen, and Trevor Dunn. I'm very excited to hear that one, Brian has been doing some incredible stuff lately.

I went to all of the year-end "support the Stone" benefit nights at the end of the year... a huge crowd of people showed up for the first one, I think in response to the news about it closing. Lots of people had to be turned away from the first set and they ended up adding a late set on the spur of the moment to accommodate people. At the end Mr. Z told us that "the Stone isn't closing, it's MOVING!" and seemed very confident/positive about it all. Hopefully this means he's got some good stuff in the works. :-)
I'll still be sad to lose the old space, it has so many good memories for me.

An update on the Stone website...
"BREAKING NEWS! The one constant in NYC is CHANGE and after 13 years in the East Village and 7500 performances THE STONE will be closing its doors. FEBRUARY 2018 will be our last month at Avenue C and 2nd street. We hope to secure a new location and discussions are proceeding but as yet nothing has been definitely decided.
All of us at THE STONE extend heartfelt thanks to the musicians who have performed here, the volunteers who have kept it running, our patrons who have given generously to help cover our expenses and to our audience for its support. We do hope you will all enjoy this last year in our historic underground East Village location and that you will all follow the music wherever it leads. Venues come and go but the music continues on forever!
--John Zorn, artistic director of THE STONE"

I guess someone should post it here for those not participating in social media and/or the rumor mill. The Stone's website has been updated to indicate that the venue will be closing in February of 2018.
Many rumors swirling around, including possibility of relocation/a new direction at another venue, but I don't know anything for sure. And I haven't seen it confirmed by anyone, but everyone is of the opinion that they are losing the space they're renting. Not really a surprise considering how that neighborhood is going.
Very sad... I hope Mr. Z can turn lemons into lemonade and find a new space or something. It would be really awful to lose the stellar programming there, and I love the community that surrounds it. There's nothing in the world like it!

My first thought was - there are so many, how do you pick? My second thought was: Bar Kokhba's 50th Birthday 3CD live album.

I'd originally heard there would be a Nat. Sawdust Zorn thing on the Friday night too, but it's not listed on their site so maybe that got scrapped. But there is still a bit of a Zorn mini-festival with the Miller show on Thursday, Nat Sawdust Saturday, and the Guggenheim on Sunday.

- Village Vanguard in august (to be confirmed) - National Sawdust in october (to be confirmed) Village Vanguard is Aug 9-14, all Bagatelles. October will have a show at the Miller (20th) National Sawdust (21-22) and the Guggenheim (23-24). Not sure what will be played at the Miller; the Gugg. shows look similar to the one he did there earlier this year; National Sawdust has one Bagatelles marathon night and one Essential Cinema night.

I've got tickets to all five sets at National Sawdust this weekend, and 11 at the Village Vanguard. Hoping to hit the Mary Halvorson set also.
Some of the VV sets are starting to sell out...

Cool! I will see you there (and maybe at the Stone... and National Sawdust... ?)
It really is a ridiculous time to be a Zorn fan... he is doing 19 sets in 10 days and I think I might hurt myself if I go to all of them.

That is quite a disappointment for you :-( NYC jaunt is always a good idea and there's no shortage of concerts for you to see here! Weekends in October at National Sawdust, a week at the Vanguard in November, and a week of Bagatelles and improv sets over New Years...

The Bagatelles have been really excellent. Kind of similar to Book of Angels in concept, in that he is giving them a skeleton to work with and then picking different bands to arrange and perform an hour's worth of music apiece. (But the music is not at all Masada-esque, to my ear.) I've seen six of them and he conducted one of them (Asmodeus) but not the other five. Not sure why he conducts some bands and not others...
Haven't gotten the 2nd Simulacrum CD but I'm very curious to hear some reviews on it. I listened to the 30 second samples on Amazon and couldn't quite make up my mind. I have tix to see them in October, though...
I like the Forro Zinho CD quite a bit, it's light (for Zorn) but it's good fun.
I ended up really enjoying the Song Project live, in spite of not loving the vocals on some of them I think the band gave some outstanding performances that night. Pellucidar grew on me a bit but is still probably my least favorite Dreamers CD. Looking forward to maybe hearing some of it live in November, though - live is always better with musicians like these...
In related news: I heard they are planning a box set for the Book of Beriah releases.

I think I'll be a bit too busy catching Zorn shows in NYC to go to Indiana ;-) but I hope you enjoy it! I've never seen either band (but I have a ticket to see Simulacrum in October).
