Speaking about Tzadik releases... Forgive this harsh note of mine, but the other day I accidentally read this in John Zorn's Facebook page (which operates with his permission):
Submissions for Tzadik release consideration: 200 E 10th St. PMB 126, New York, NY 10003 with a letter greeting John Zorn or it will not reach him.
To be completely honest, even if I would be the first one greeting him if had to present material for a potential release, writing such request explicitly seemed a bit too much for me. Too much ego, I mean.
And even though he has always been very prolific (I have been following him for over 20 years), I honestly don't get why we have 6 volumes of Moonchild, 5 volumes of Simulacrum, 4/5 discs by The Dreamers and so many repeated/similar releases. Masada got a bit out of hand, imho.
I support the Masada project as it exposed the skills and work of previously less known - to me at least - artists. And I was glad to see the turnover from his usual long time collaborators (Baron, Ribot, Cohen Baptista, etc), in favor of a new generation of musicians. However, I feel like what currently interests me about the entire Masada project is rather a side-effect than the real motiv behind it (which I don't know).
When someone's output is so large, it is easier to find lower points, I think. There are too many of his latest records that will pass unnoticed because artistically weak (Mount Analogue? Dreammachines?).
Live shows are a different story: I really dig the energy that Zorn ensembles put on stage, though it has been a long time since I have gone to one of his shows, unfortunately.
Looking forward to hearing your opinions.
