I can't wait to see what Book Of Beriah is like too I love the sound of viola d'amore so I'm interested to hear how that meshes with BoA30: potentially, this could be another highlight of the series. Since it's the penultimate volume, I wonder what comes next ... will we finally see a volume from the original quartet? If not can we have a quartet boxed set of Book 2 complete pretty please? In other news, I see tha Zion 80 is recording a Book 3 volume.

Since it's the penultimate volume, I wonder what comes next ... #31 has been recorded with a trio of Brian Marsella, Kenny Wollesen, and Trevor Dunn. I'm very excited to hear that one, Brian has been doing some incredible stuff lately.

No, I don't. I check his pages for the concert schedule every now and again. I guess you answered part of my question though.

This Buer, Book of Angels vol 31, seems very interesting. I wonder if Marsella's trio will invent something as diverse and funny as Rob Burger's 2002 Lost Photograph (highly recommended).

Their bagatelles performances were some of the best of the series (IMO), so I have high hopes. Though I wouldn't necessarily expect anything like Lost Photograph... who knows? They are doing the Buer live premiere at the Stone on my birthday That will make party planning quite easy.

Any news on new premieres of Zorn's classical works? I haven't heard anything on that end for a while (unlike Book Of Angels) Also, it's cool that John is doing the solo performance commission series, I was hoping he'd do something like that again

I've got to say that the Book of Angels stayed good to the last drop: all three of the final volumes are essential. AutorYno's is one of the best Rock albums in Zorn's catalogue (outside maybe some of the Moonchild discs); Knox's is a very beautiful album; Marsella's is such a clever trio disc. To be honest I felt that some of the early discs in the series were disappointing or throwaway, but things really took off in the twenties.

I haven't listened to the AutorYno or Knox discs yet (I'm so behind on my listening... too much live music, not enough time for studio recordings!) but I had to hear Buer right away, I was looking forward to it so much. Great stuff. Maybe this weekend I'll crack open the other two.

Judging from the list of references Buer draws inspiration from (McCoy Tyner, Don Pullen, Erik Satie, Conlon Nancarrow, Horace Silver,Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans, Bach, Bud Powell, RichardTwardzik, Debussy) and seeing few of my dearest artists there (Debussy, Satie, Pullen), I am really looking forward to it.
For what it counts, I didn't hear all volumes, but Secret Chiefs 3 and Pat Metheny's are definitely takeaways.

I'm struck by what a quiet 2017 Zorn is having compared with the previous "one per month" schedule. Gearing up to the release of Beriah maybe? Midsummer Moons is the latest that I own and very much one for fans of the easier end of the spectrum.
