I am. Miles is a fucking huge inspiration to me as a trumpeter and improviser. His quintet with Wayne Shorter/Tony Williams etc. is probably my favourite period.

Yeah man, nothing on this earth sounds like Miles trumpet. Favourite period for me would have to be the electric period, 68 - 75, but I love that quintet also. Tony Williams kills. Have you heard Water Babies? Definitely worth checking..... Randomly on eBay yesterday and managed to snare a new sealed copy of The Cellar Door Sessions. Been meaning to pick it up for a good while now, and cant wait to hear it. 6cds is alot to digest though, gonna take my time with it....And, of course the On The Corner box when its released, although it looks like its been delayed.....

Yeah, been playing for 12 years. What is Water Babies? Thats cool man. Im a drummer, retired now though! Water Babies is a collection of material from the Shorter / Williams era, that didnt get put out until 1976. Its a great album, like alot of single Miles Cds, its available pretty cheap.....

Nice. I fucking love the drums. If I wasn't a lazy bastard I'd consider taking them up myself.
And I'll have to look out for that release...

A few years back I was on a huge Miles kick. I really only concentrated on the 68-75 period. Shockingly, I thought On The Corner was good! I really loved, um, In A Quiet Mood?? (It's been a while.) And Bitches Brew. Plus the two live in Japan double disc sets - Pangea, and, er..... Anyway, it was fun. But it was a phase for me. I lost all interest. I love Coltrane more. Especially his "difficult" period, as well. Don't listen to "Jazz" now though. Mostly "heavy music" and "modern classical". Labels, labels, labels, eh?

I've hardly been able to listen to anything else since I got it.. it seems to flow pretty well as a giant album for me. I got a kick out of the stylus review.. "Six discs. Say that real loud and fast. It sounds like “sex dicks.” That’s dirty. This is the dirtiest shit you will ever hear in your life. It’s filthier than a back alley filled with rabies-infected dogs eating used condoms. Bathroom floors in strip clubs are cleaner than this. You’ll wash your ears with bleach after you hear it. Oh yeah, and there’s six discs of it. " www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/miles-davis/the-complete-on-the-corner-sessions.htm

Miles was my entry into jazz and improvised music. I picked up a copy of the "Bitches Brew" double LP (back in the days of vinyl) at a flea market - I had heard of Miles and he was supposed to be pretty good - little did I know what I was in for...
Anyway he blew... and I was lucky enough to see him live in Australia in 1988...
That show was like a brick in the forehead... everyone walked out stunned.. not quite comprehending what they had seen... Listening back to live recordings of that 1988 band (with Foley and Marilym Mazur) it all comes together now but at the time it was pretty mind expanding. Trust Miles to be ahead of the pack...

Aye, listened to it last night and its definitely as good as Nefertiti. Ron Carter's playing struck me as being particularly superb last night though... rhythmically and harmonically. The compositions are interestingly structured.
