First night of Zorn in Sarajevo began on time with a solo set. He was joined by Kenny Wollesen for the final part. Zorn was as usual in total control of his instrument and he showed it with plenty of different techniques, textures, sounds, structures. For my part I saw him do some things I hadn't seen before. It was varied in mood and style, brilliant from start to finish.
Next was Insurrection, which played themes from their first album. I had already seen them in Lisbon, so it came as no suprise how good they are. I think the sound was much better and clear in Lisbon (though Marc Urselli was not there, the open air scenario may have helped them). Presenting them, Zorn said: «Insurrection. what we need now in the States».
After a brief interlude waiting so they could prepare the scenario, then came Nove Cantici per Francisco D'Assisi (which Zorn presented by saying they were now ten). I thought this was a duo project for Riley and Lange, but they were joined by Bill Frisell. Won't hear me complain! Though the interplay between Riley and Lage was clearly different and at times Frisell seemed at odds, it was great to have his personal sound on acoustic guitar added to the mix. Beautiful songs though more meditative and introspective than their stunning Midsummer Moons.
Following, we got more Lage with Songs for Petra. If you like the Song Project, you'll know what to expect. Jesse Harris's songs from that, plus some new ones (which I didn't recognize the melody of any). As with the Song Project, the band is impressive (Lage, Jorge Roeder on bass, Wollesen on drums, Jesse Harris standing around holding a guitar, plus Petra Haden on vocals). If you like her singing and Harris's naive and infantile lyrics, you'll love this. Otherwise... enjoy Lage guitar, plus Roeder and Wollesen, which were amazing.
Another brief interlude and we got Cobra, one of the best versions I've seen so far. Won't list all the musicians here, you can check them somewhere else. Just to say, Lage seemed put of his element. But after all the goodness he'd given us during the night, you can forgive the guy.
