I guess someone should post it here for those not participating in social media and/or the rumor mill. The Stone's website has been updated to indicate that the venue will be closing in February of 2018.
Many rumors swirling around, including possibility of relocation/a new direction at another venue, but I don't know anything for sure. And I haven't seen it confirmed by anyone, but everyone is of the opinion that they are losing the space they're renting. Not really a surprise considering how that neighborhood is going.
Very sad... I hope Mr. Z can turn lemons into lemonade and find a new space or something. It would be really awful to lose the stellar programming there, and I love the community that surrounds it. There's nothing in the world like it!

An update on the Stone website...
"BREAKING NEWS! The one constant in NYC is CHANGE and after 13 years in the East Village and 7500 performances THE STONE will be closing its doors. FEBRUARY 2018 will be our last month at Avenue C and 2nd street. We hope to secure a new location and discussions are proceeding but as yet nothing has been definitely decided.
All of us at THE STONE extend heartfelt thanks to the musicians who have performed here, the volunteers who have kept it running, our patrons who have given generously to help cover our expenses and to our audience for its support. We do hope you will all enjoy this last year in our historic underground East Village location and that you will all follow the music wherever it leads. Venues come and go but the music continues on forever!
--John Zorn, artistic director of THE STONE"

Yes, I read this on Facebook. Hopefully it is just relocating. John has really built something special with that venue, it'd be devastating to see it go forever

It happened with the Tonic and they moved to The Stone. They're closing The Stone and they will move somewhere else, hopefully. Thanks for spreading the news Sarah, it's sad to hear such an amazing place is shutting down. Finger crossed for the new location.

The reason for closing ? There are high rent situations in Manhattan ??, now we had the first Knitting Factory, it was amazing!!! Then we had the second Knitting Factory, with my two first Marc ribot and the postizos concert and the great Emergency with zorn, medeski, ribot, perowsky later in willisau with wollesen. Then starts the temple of Tonic, we stay on 2002/2003 with an Electric Masada concert, no words it was amazing. Also many great shows at the tonic. Then the Stone comes, 2005 great duo with zorn and medeski, after that a concert at the bowery poetry club zorn+ elliot sharp! and and and--we are a group from europe and so for us it is not easy to see all this concerts, but we hope the downtown music community grew again and again and John zorn will find a partnership to another venue, thanks for the work of the last 30 years to john zorn, thanks sarah for the information and we dont want to close the forum book!!! cheers

I went to all of the year-end "support the Stone" benefit nights at the end of the year... a huge crowd of people showed up for the first one, I think in response to the news about it closing. Lots of people had to be turned away from the first set and they ended up adding a late set on the spur of the moment to accommodate people. At the end Mr. Z told us that "the Stone isn't closing, it's MOVING!" and seemed very confident/positive about it all. Hopefully this means he's got some good stuff in the works. :-)
I'll still be sad to lose the old space, it has so many good memories for me.

It's sad to hear that The Stone is closing, just when I was getting used to how to find it! It's hard to believe that wherever it moves to next will be any easier to find or get to. I'm planning another trip at Easter, and that will probably be my last: at least I'll know in advance.

Sounds like a substantial upgrade for The Stone and I'm glad that it will be easier to get to next year.

Yes, it's hard to be any easier to get to! I believe it's less than 10 minutes walk from 18 different subway lines...
