Some of you may know already about the Zappa Family Trust shutting down Killuglyradio.com and their impending legal action against the annual Zappanale event in Germany. Rather than go after bootleggers making a profit out of Frank, they seem to be going after the ones who are promoting his music and legacy.... Thought some of you may be interested in signing this petition - "Aggressive Action by the Zappa Family Trust" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: www.PetitionOnline.com/ZFT/

Maybe not the thread to ask this, but you've prompted me to visit Zappa.com for the first time in a while and I wonder if someone can bring me up to date with the great man's work. I've got most of the original albums, and collected most of the last releases that he made while alive, but I haven't bought the posthumous stuff since Halloween. Is any of it essential?

Maybe not the thread to ask this, but you've prompted me to visit Zappa.com for the first time in a while and I wonder if someone can bring me up to date with the great man's work. I've got most of the original albums, and collected most of the last releases that he made while alive, but I haven't bought the posthumous stuff since Halloween. Is any of it essential? Yes! Namely - IMAGINARY DISEASES - Never before heard live stuff from the 10 piece Petit Wazoo band. Great album, if you like that era ( Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka ) but also early snippets of later tunes in there like Cucamonga, Greggerry Peccary, etc..... TRANCE-FUSION - His third album of guitar solos. Again, if you like Guitar, and Shut Up N Play Yr Guitar, youll love this. BUFFALO - 2 Cd, complete show from the 1981 band. Quality. Line up kinda says it all! My album of 2007.... FZ: Lead Guitar & Vocals Steve Vai: Stunt Guitar & Background Vocals Ray White: Vocals & Rhythm Guitar Ike Willis: Vocals & Rhythm Guitar Tommy Mars: Keyboards & Vocals Bob Harris: Keyboards, Trumpet & High Vocals Arthur Barrow:* Bass & Vocals Vinnie Colaiuta: Drums, Vocals WAZOO - 2 Cd set of The Grand Wazoo / Hot Rats Orchestra. Like IM, but the big band. Only did one tour, then was disbanded. Again, if you like that era, youll love this. The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary in its original, instrumental form! ......other, "not so essential" releases IMO have been - Joes Corsage ( a compilation of early Mothers stuff, including demos )... Joes Domage ( a rehearsal tape(!) from The Grand Wazoo sessions )... Joes Xmasage ( more early stuff, but probably more interesting than the above two in this series )... MOFO - Making Of Freak Out! 2cd version ( original mono mix of FO!, plus some outtakes and early version, etc for the second disc. Pretty pointless this release IMO. They should have just put out the big MOFO, below )... MOFO - Making Of Freak Out! 4Cd Deluxe Version ( as above, but some more outtakes, remixes, live stuff, interviews, etc etc...... ) The Dub Room Special - Sountrack cd to the DVD. Great sound, great music, but out of the two, the DRS dvd is more essential! I would say all the Joes... and MOFOs are for real hardcore fans only.

Thanks Papa: just the sort of info I was looking for. Let's make a Jazz Noise Here is my favourite single release, so I guess that Imaginary Diseases and Wazoo are the ones that I should get, but I'll keep Buffalo on my wishlist. Amazon doesn't give a setlist for that release, and neither does Zappa.com as far as I can see: what are the highlights on Buffalo?
Edit: Wikipedia Knows All Things:
Disc 1 "Chunga’s Revenge" – 8:34 "You Are What You Is" – 4:12 "Mudd Club" – 3:02 "The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing" – 3:21 "Cosmik Debris" – 3:50 "Keep It Greasy" – 2:58 "Tinsel Town Rebellion" – 4:19 "Buffalo Drowning Witch" – 2:44 "Honey, Don’t You Want a Man Like Me?" – 4:36 "Pick Me, I’m Clean" – 10:15 "Dead Girls Of London" – 3:02 "Shall We Take Ourselves Seriously?" – 1:36 "City of Tiny Lites" – 9:58
Disc 2 "Easy Meat" – 9:26 "Ain’t Got No Heart" – 2:00 "The Torture Never Stops" – 23:36 "Broken Hearts Are for Assholes" – 3:39 "I’m So Cute" – 1:38 "Andy" – 8:14 "Joe’s Garage" – 2:12 "Dancing Fool" – 3:36 "The “Real World” Thematic Extrapolations" – 8:53 "Stick It Out" – 5:36 "I Don’t Wanna Get Drafted" – 2:48 "Bobby Brown" – 2:42 "Ms Pinky" – 3:48

The highlights on Buffalo are pretty much the whole thing! As its an entire concert, it all runs very well! Pick Me Im Clean springs to ming in particular though..... Great solos throughout also!

Thanks for the reminder. I used to buy from G&S when I first got into Zappa, but I've tended to move to larger e-tailers since then. I'll check them out and compare.

Yeah, I bought most of his catalogue from them, back in the day. During the Zappa Records transition to Rykodisc, they were selling all the Zappa Records titles at a great price, so I duly took advantage......
They have always been quality, great communication, very friendly and quick!

They have always been quality, great communication, very friendly and quick! I think that we would have been buying at the same time, then. I was really lucky to get into Zappa just as he entered that final, prolific phase (e.g. You can't Do That On Stage Anymore, which I was able to buy volume by volume as it was issued).

Next to acquire on my list are: Joes Garage Lumpy Gravy YCDTOSA series Zappa In New York Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch Zappa in New York is fantastic, but it's all on Lather, and if you haven't already got Lather, that's the one to go for. "Punky's Whips" and "The Illinois Enema Bandit" are both great from that album. Joe's Garage is an amazing album if you can bear the plot and narration: it'd be in my Zappa top ten, I think: some of his best guitarwork ever. Lumpy Gravy is a must if you're into Civilisation Phase III, but I generally listen to its highlights as pieces on later, live albums. YCDTOSA is, in my view, a mixed bag: volume two (the only single-concert volume) is possibly the best overall. The dirty stuff turns up on volume 6. Vol. 1 has a "Torture" that was the first song by Zappa that I listened to really obsessively. I don't have Witch, but there's quite a funny liner note on one of the YCDTOSA about the fact that his bands couldn't play the title track live.

Agreed about Lather.....I bought all the albums that it houses prior to its issue, but as a set, Lather really kicks ass. It shows all aspects of Zappas work, and as a whole, it works so well... All the other albums mentioned above are great IMO, not much to say other than that. All the YCDTOSA are different, but I love em all.....!!

Just ordered this - " Ensemble Ambrosius is a group that concentrates in contemporary music using mostly Baroque instruments. It was formed in 1995 and from the very beginning the music of Frank Zappa has been one of their main focuses. Approved by the Zappa Family Trust, the liner notes include Ali N. Askin talking enthusiastically about the music, with it's "unconventional usage of instruments, unexpected turns and cool combinations. I was just enjoying the music, which was so familiar, but yet sounded so different. " Apparently its really good. Sounds it.

Definitely get Lather, it's an essential release, and while you've heard most of the tracks before, there's just something about it that makes it so awesome by comparison.
Of the more recent releases, get Wazoo first, it's an incredible live album.
