I guess we have gotten so jaded that we don't even talk about JZ's new releases any more? Le Zornographe just posted (if my French translator is accurate) that Pat Metheny is going to be doing BOA #20, due in May. And didn't we hear that Omri Mor is doing one as well? So I guess speculation that they'll end at 20 may not be true. Unless there's going to be a new series after 20 - book 3? Meanwhile, a couple of interesting ones posted on the Tzadik site: John Zorn: The Mysteries [#8306] A second volume from the fabulous trio of Bill Frisell, Carol Emanuel and Kenny Wollesen who first came together on the Gnostic Preludes from 2012. Universally acclaimed as one of Zorn’s most beautiful and evocative projects, the music here follows in that tradition—a minimalist modal lyricism distinguished by complex rhythmic twists and turns, Zorn’s dramatic ever-shifting sound blocks and of course the brilliant improvisations of guitar wizard Bill Frisell. Gorgeous mystical music uniting Ancient traditions with those of the 21st century, this is a charming collection of Gnostic Odes and Dances to be enjoyed by young and old alike! Jon Madof: Zion80 [#8175] Zion80 explores the music of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach through the lens of the Afrobeat funk master Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Led by Jon Madof of Rashanim, the 13-piece band arranges Carlebach's beautiful melodies usng the polyrhythmic intensity of Afrobeat, blended with the improvisational madness of the Downtown scene. Madof’s most ambitious project to date, Zion80 is blazing hot and tight as a drum. Spiritual, grooving, and endlessly exciting, this is essential Jewish music for the 21st century. You can pre-order the Zion80 one on their website: zion80.com/presale/Thinking about going down for a weekend of the Zion80 Stone residency in April although it's the week after I'm going to Minneapolis for the Zornathon there, which makes it complicated work-wise...

I recently picked up the new Bill Frisell album "Silent Comedy", which is awesome. It's the typical Frisell tone and style, but here he seems totally free - a very improvisational feel to it all. Not sure if that is the whole point of the record, but it's a new thing to hear BF in that environment, and his playing is still as excellent and as beautiful as ever. Recommended!
Next for me is going to be Lemma. The samples sound great.
Oh, and whilst I've not been too excited for more BOA, the upcoming Metheny volume sounds like it'll be worth hearing... Also, I'm not overly keen on hearing more from The Gnostic Preludes trio / camp. Yes, TGP is a great album and the trio sound brilliant together, but I hope Zorn doesn't oversaturate things with release upon release ( as he seemed to with many of his recent "nicer" albums ) - sometimes albums blossom more when they are one-offs.
But hey, what do I know? I'll check out most things the label puts out...

Has anyone heard Lemma (besides the samples)? Haven't picked that up yet either. I googled to see if there was a review or something, and found this instead: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorn%27s_lemma I guess that must have been on purpose...

I like it, but I'm rather in love with JZ's composition for strings, so it's not a huge surprise.

Speaking of recent releases., anybody heard the latest Filmworks (Vol. XXV)? It's a piano focused album with three different pianist (Rob Burger!), including Zorn himself, and as they say it might be the very last one (which I doubt), it could be somehow 'special'. Thanks. And even if it's a bit off topic, did anybody check Kramer's latest album (on Tzadik) "The brill building"? This distorted rendition of "Do wah diddy diddy" www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1nQNOtGMNQit is so fascinating, so to speak. The typical awfully catchy covers by Kramer. Yes, Bill Frisell's return under Zorn's wing sounded very promising and a solo effort out of the bluesy/jazzy swamp BF got stuck after Naked City, certainly deserves a careful listen. That said, I must say I love Frisell when he plays 'normal' too, I just felt like he had stayed on that path for a bit too long.

I do have the most recent Filmworks, although I only had time to listen a couple of times - I like it a lot.

As it's all solo violin, it's very all emcompassing and focused. I really got caught up in my first two listens. The version of Ceremonial Magic is interesting, obviously being familiar with the piano / bass / drums version of it on Rimbaud - I want to hear both versions simultaneosly now! Well worth picking up.

I thought Ceremonial magic was on Music and its double. Right, and it's a violin/drums duo.
