Zophorus doesn't give much in track 1, or really 2 for that matter, though i do like 2. 3 and 4 are great and 5 is a nice short sharp outro. Peace for Animals.. i wrote a review of that on the yahoo group when i got it likee the day after it came out, but it never was posted up there. I reckon it's one of the worst he's put out. Still waiting to check out Higanbana and Here of course. Hig's mp3 sounds more promising, Here sounds a little similar to the general 2007 sound.

Well after a first listen, I really enjoyed this release. Ill try my best to give you an insight into the album, but Ive never been too hot on describing Merzbow as others seem to do so well, but here goes.....
First track, the title track, initially reminded me of Turmeric, in particular Black Flesh parts 1 - 4. An interesting piece, but very reminiscent of the laptop era, sounds very "laptop", if you know what I mean.
Sets things up nicely for Toritabuto though, which is the definite highlight of the album for me.There is alot happening here throughout. What sounds like "industrial" samples ( anvils? machinery? ) crash over more top end waves of noise, eventually giving in to a brutal bottom end assault... The samples get more varied, and it all gets busier.Just as it seems to stagnate, it introduces a more organic, feedback, old skool Merzbow sound, reminiscent of Green Wheels era.Its all added to the proceedings, creating a very creative wall of Merz... Some additions and samples reminded me of parts of SCSI Duck, in particular Rock Me Booa - High end pulsating loops...... It does seem to lose its way a little towards the end of the track, before picking up the pace again wth another wave of additions to the waves - some of which sound like fucking R2D2! This piece does have a really genuine feel to it, and has alot of direction. Its conclusion makes alot of sense, as does the whole piece at nearly 25 minutes long. A really great Merzbow track IMO.
The third and final track, Pigeon Car, was the least impressive track for me. Again, the first five minutes tread water, and feel very "laptop" and cold. It does however grow into a more organic piece - feedback and old analogue sounds introduced, and its definitely for the better. Seems to end without really finding its feet, but hey, it was my frst listen after all, and maybe itll grow on me!
All three tracks have a unified feel to them. This "feels like an album", rather than just "three pieces of Merzbow". I recommend this, I really enjoyed it.

thanks for the write up pappa! am damn keen to catch up on a cpl of these new ones.. i love that it sounds a little laptoppy (though personally i would strongly contest that turmeric disc 1 or any of turmeric sounds laptoppy, unless you are talking specifically about black blood 3+4's use of a single backing loop, which is the only characteristic from that era as far as i can hear.. but that release was like waaaaayyy anti-laptop sound/structure). but i do enjoy when he's being structurally strong/creative w loops.. which is what i liked about sphere and rattus albums.

let us know how live destruction sits,, Live Destruction sits very well indeed, I really enjoyed it. A fine example of his post - laptop era. Will post a further insight when I delve further with more listens..... Space Metalizer was on last night and I loved it too. Seems most Merzbow fans enjoy this too.... Agree with your comments on Cycle and Maschinenstil too people. As a Zappa fan, its always a joy hearing the Bozzio samples in there on Masch.... Truly great Merz albums......

i must say, space met i thought was a little overrated when i first came to it as i'd heard so many rave reviews. but i can't really deny that's it is a fine album after all this time

Here really took me by surprise, considering that most of his post-2000 albums have been pretty dire. It was a rare step back to his 90s material, and it sounds absolutely great.
