here's what WOM wrote me yesterday:
You're in the first 400 to get Xaphan, because this item has been RECALLED by Tzadik due to a minor die-cut error in the cardboard sleeve. John Zorn allowed us to take a box & send them out anyway -- could be something of a "collectors item", who knows? Just so you know what's been going on... it's been something of a saga with this CD. (Xaphan is a trickster, so they say).
whew, it's all done now though! enjoy!

I've seen copies at Amoeba San Francisco.. two of the points in the star aren't as sharp as they should be.

I got my copy on Friday from Web of Mimicry and didn't notice a thing different about the cover. OTOH, I've been too busy listening to the record to look at the cover.
Initial impressions are highly positive-- it's very much what I felt Koby Israelite was going for with "Orobas", but significantly more successful. Spruance effortly blends genres and manages a great cinematic sound.

I looked at my friend's copy of Xaphan and did anyone else find the computer drawing inserts behind the CD tray?

I add what good Diego Gruber wrote yesterday on the zorn list, quick link to 2 downloadable mp3 with a veeery interesting interview to Mr Spruance: "Xaphan is great indeed. You might be interested in listening to a recent interview with Spruance (here are parts 1 sittingnow.co.uk/archives/18 and part 2 sittingnow.co.uk/archives/25) In part 1 he discusses the process of making Xaphan as well as some aspects of his relationship with Zorn over the years. Quite interesting." ciao

Xaphan is, in my opinion, the best volume of the Book Of Angels series. Instantly appealing, and is just an incredible album.
A serious contender for release of the year already.

I think I might be the only one to say this... but there's always something that bothers me about the Secret Chiefs 3... yes, they're all technically good, yes they're technically good arrangements with variety (though it feels very choppy, "insert this type of music there, insert that genre-ish sound here)...
I never feel that extra unique and passionate wildness/tenderness that puts the heart into playing or arrangements except for when I heard them live with Eyvind Kang two years ago. I love what I feel is the melodies of the compositions but minus one or two parts of the later/middle tracks of Xaphan, the album feels sort of sterile and not as depthy in sound quality to me. I'm sure the music sounds more lively...live..
