SC3 Masada Album: Xaphan - Book of Angels Vol.9, out April 11. "This thing turned pretty colossal. It was supposed to be simple -- quickly recorded, fairly simple tunes, etc. But Zorn saddled us with some really strong material. Accordingly, I couldn't resist milking all the arrangement possibilities for all they were worth. As happens in the presence of any well written material, new ideas kept occuring to the one keeping the arranger/production chair warm with his sweat. In my experience, when you hear the arranger's muse you only refuse her when you are ready to stop hearing altogether. Despite the inevitable merits of that kind of Silence, we're definitely nowhere near good enough for it yet. ...so we ran with the call of the imaginal, hoping not to soil the angelic personages duly represented with anything unbefitting their various (usually somewhat malevolent) dispositions. On the other hand, we sought to do battle with some of them, and battle we did... For his part, Zorn, who in this case also occupies the seat of the Record Company, gave us a long leash and was very patient when he didn't AT ALL need to be. Xaphan is the result of his faith in our often tiresome methodology, a faith that we did not earn; but is more a testimony to the strength of the inspired, direct and non-convoluted musical writing he does for Masada. The convolutions he left entirely to us! The listener will have to be the ultimate judge of the wisdom of that! We know a lot of you have been waiting a long time for new music from the SC3 -- as a teaser advertisement we'll post some kind of musical montage of some of the stuff from this album here on myspace in the near future... We think that this one will definitely appease the anxious and delight the curious. But yes, the Book of Souls material will start to trickle out in folios thereafter... Check the mimicry store ( www.webofmimicry.com/store ) for this and all upcoming releases." www.myspace.com/secretchiefs3 Xaphan? look here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xaphan

I've really gotten into the Book of Angels series in the last few weeks, after neglecting them for so long. Picked up the Marc Ribot disc maybe 2 weeks back, and have since gotten the rest. This one of course, sounds intrigueing as well. I've always been impressed with the way Zorn seems to run Tzadik. I've seen/heard very similar comments as the one above from a lot of people in the past.

Xaphan? look here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xaphan Book of Souls? is this the 3rd Masada book? someone here mentioned a French magazine interview in which Zorn said the 3rd book had already been written.. in the follow up to Claudia Heuermann's Sabbath in Paradise Zorn is talking about writing the first two books, the first being about the material world, the second about the angelic realm and the third 'will be about the spiritual world'.. i think that footage was shot around 2005 really enjoying all Book 2 releases so far, (well, to be honest i don't listen to Kobi Isrealite's that much.. prefer his solo stuff) can't imagine how the 3rd book is going to sound.. anyone has specific information about it? in any case, im really looking forward to hear this, and Lucifer (and the dreamers, and the Masada Sextet and so on.. hard to keep up!)

Book of Souls will be (I think) the next SC3 project after Book of Horizons. About Masada Book 3, in the extra documentary to the Sabbath in paradise DVD you can see for a few seconds Zorn flipping through his notebook, here you can read things like (if my memory is correct) : The gift vol.2 (way before the Dreamers project was announced) and a brief explanation of the 3 Masada books.

i would love for Zorn to go further out and bring in some new and different collaborators for any more Masada stuff he does. don't get me wrong. i probably COULD listen to some of these cats even if they did a whole Masada Book themselves, but it would still be interesting to bring in some new(er) blood, at least as it relates to the Masada books.....of course, WHO that could be (a good fit and able to put an interesting take on this music) I have no idea....

I've always thought Medeski Martin & Wood would make an extraordinary adition to Masada Book II.. And I'm a fan of Gov't Mule, but that would be stretching it too far..

ahhh....but what is 'too far'? it would all depend on Zorn's vision for these songs.

I have actually got a couple of early Masada shows circa 1993-1994 that feature Medeski, Martin, and Wood, backing Zorn in early renditions of tunes from Masada Book 1, the sound quality is not all that great, but the playing is killer!!! Here to hoping that the next Book of Angels Volume is with MMW! Cheers
