I've got it, though it's been some time since I listened to it. It's not my favourite but I still think it's okay. If you're into Akita's more grindcore-inspired stuff and enjoy Venereology or similar releases, I think you might enjoy this one! Really harsh album with some nice EMS Synthi A sounds.
Does any of you guys know a place where I can order Dolphin Sonar? I ordered this one at the beginning of August at Amazon, but they still haven't shipped it to me.
Oh, and my copy of Anicca arrived yesterday.

Oh, and my copy of Anicca arrived yesterday. Yeah, you can tell by some of the song titles that its during MAs Grind influenced period! Look forward to checking it out, although I have so much new music to listen to, its getting stupid! Re Dolphin Sonar, Caiman have some and they are cheap and reliable. They are on the Amazon Market Place sellers, and I have used them many times. I will buy my copy from there I think. And Thrench, Green Wheels is very enjoyable IMO. I loved it more when I first got it, but over time I do think its appeal has kinda waned - it is very similar to other releases around that same time. As for the 5' vinyl, I havent played my copy, so cannot comment on that!

Received the wooden box today, very very nice package. I've also had a listen, got upto about 4 minutes of track 4 before having to carry out "getting little one to bed" routine. A quick report on it so far is good listening, very complex with lots going on in the mix. I really enjoyed my initial listen.

I gotta say Eucalypse didn't do it for me. Dolphin Sonar I think is a strong release. Nice little sample from SCSI Duck at 16:43 on Part 2 (which originally came from Tauromachine). From what I heard of Attica on the website, stopping and starting again every 30secs or so as their mp3s do, it didn't sound particularly great, similar to Dolphin Sonar, but not as interesting in construction. Halcyon what did you think of Annica? I still haven't heard Arijigoku - I wonder if they're similar with the drums and the approach to the texture. I'm glad about Dolphin Sonar - was getting a little worried for a bit, and I still am a little. The albums these days are a lot less differentiated to what they were around 2004-05..

Yet to receive Eucalype or DS, but yes, I would say Anicca and Arijigoku are quite similar. Apart from Anicca Part One, the other two tracks were done at the same studio ( presumably on the same session ) as Arijigoku. Annica Part 3 I really enjoyed, but the first two pieces didnt blow me away. I prefer Arijigoku as an album...

From what I heard of Anicca on the website, stopping and starting again every 30secs or so as their mp3s do, it didn't sound particularly great, similar to Dolphin Sonar, but not as interesting in construction. Halcyon what did you think of Annica? I still haven't heard Arijigoku - I wonder if they're similar with the drums and the approach to the texture. Yes, the first track on Anicca is very similar in sound and structure to the tracks on Arijigoku. However, I think you can hear the drums more clearly on Anicca. I like the track, simply because I enjoy this sort of powerful freestyle drumming very much. Contrary to that, the second track didn't do much for me. It's very harsh and loud but I think it simply doesn't sound interesting and varied enough for its length. . However, the third and final track is really good again imo. It's an interesting mixture of harsh analogue and distinctively digital sounds. There also some very rhythmic sounds throughout the whole track, which make the whole thing even more enjoyable. Albeit almost 20 minutes long, Anicca Part 3 is for me one of those Merzbow tracks where time flies by really fast because they sound so interesting. As a whole, I think I like Anicca more than Arijogoku. It's a little shorter than Arijigoku but offers much more variation during that time span than Arijigoku. I agree and I'm a little disappointed by that. I was hoping that Akita would use his new mixture of digital and analog instruments to create even more varied music, but now I think it's quite the contrary. I think his current releases lack the variety of earlier releases like Sphere, Senmaida and Rattus Rattus. I mean, those three were all released in the same year, but they all sounded very distinctive and unique imo. I'm glad you liked Dolphin Sonar. I hope my copy arrives soon.

Thanks for the feedback re Annica and Arijigoku. In recent news Eucalypse has grown on me quite a lot. I put Bariken on after listening to Eucalypse three times in repetition and instantly apparent is how much thinner the laptop material sounds. The texture on Eucalypse is aided through the melodic element. Originally I was put off by this and the rhythmic element, but I think he's done the melodic strands better than he normally does (traces of it on FID, Merzbear, Zophorus. Coma B too of course). I think it's quite an accessible album, and quite well crafted with tracks offering different focal points, and the rhythm esp on track 4 doesn't stagnate. Dolphin Sonar is exciting as it's more abstract, harder to fathom, though still with an eye towards tighter structure. This is what has worried me about reports on Arijogoku and Annica, that they're just too loose, esp w the free form drumming (not a fan - anyone can get behind a kit and do free jazz). Halycon, you picked a good set of three to compare there. I think Rattus Rattus is an amazing album. Ok, fair enough that he's not doing anymore Senmaida etc (that material along w Merzbuta, Rice etc was obviously v different to other Merzbow material and hit its highpoint around then), but yeah it's a little run of the mill at the moment. The use of drums would suggest possibilities for more interesting sounds and textures, but it seems not. Putting on noise and drumming over slabs of noise isn't very inventive I'm sorry! Why not study the effect of hitting, process the drum accents more, line other events up with them? Even if it just happens briefly a couple of times.. I just know that he's the person in Noise that can conceive these sorts of concurrences, yet I hope he's not just being lazy en route to 1000 releases!
I'm quite interested to hear what Camoflague will be like given all of this..

MA's Prosperity of Vice. Had one listen so far and I like it a lot. Pretty different from a lot of Merzbow stuff. After one listen I'm going in a Music for Bondage Performance type sound, although it's similar to Live at Radio 100 at times. Each track is pretty short (the longest being around 6 minutes). I'm now waiting for A Day of Seals to turn up. I'm looking forward to hearing it. I've had a look over the various reviews on the net and it seems to have received a pretty mixed reaction. I like the idea of a "black ambient" sound as one reviewer put it.

ADOS rules Thrench, you will love it.
Dolphin Sonar arrived yesterday, and on first listen it was very enjoyable.
Id put Here and D.S. as my favourite Merz releases of 2008...

Yes, Day of Seals is wonderful! I listened to the whole set for the first time last month and since then I can't stop listening to it! I think "Black Ambient" is indeed a very good description of this album. I also listened to Eucalypse quite often recently and it's a very satisfying release for me. I think it sounds ike a mixture of Merzbear and Coma Berenices, which is fine for me as those were my favourite Merz releases in 2007.

Just received Richard Pinhas/Merzbow - Keio Line. If I like the album, maybe I'll go to their show in Köln next month.
