I play in a jazz combo with a few folks from my school on Friday afternoons. Usually we play a variety of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Ornette Coleman tunes. Recently, however, I've been taking in some Masada tunes to play through/improvise over. We're working on Otiot and Tannaim currently.
Otiot was fairly easy to prepare, as their is a copy of the sheet music in the Sanhedrin album booklet. I've had to transcribe Tannaim though. I've got the melody and bassline down, but I've had problems figuring out the interval between Zorn and Douglas when they're playing the head. We played Tannaim yesterday, with myself (trumpet) playing on the root, and the bari sax player playing a third above. It sounded good... but its not what it sounds like on the recording.
Can anyone with a better ear than myself distinguish what they're doing?
Thanks.

Also, does anyone know if Zorn/tzadik/etc. would be willing to send me copies of Masada-book lead sheets if I wrote to them and asked?

I've got no idea, but try them and see ... the worst you will get is a refusal. I actually think that if he wanted to publish them then they would be commercially available: also, he may wish to occlude the means by which the heads are elaborated, in the same way that he has declined to publish the rules of the game pieces. Give it a go, though ... you may be lucky enough to get a response from the great man himself.

for anyone interested in Zorn's scores, you gotta check out www.hipsroadedition.com/they are officially linked to him, and there's a "buy or rent scores" section. Well, it mostly applies to the "concert music", but the Masada ones should be available. The fact is, I once tried to get a copy of The Book of Heads score and they were willing to send it to me as long as I was paying between 200-400 $, don't remember the exact amount. And they sometime just loan it to you.

Hi King, i've worked on a number of transcriptions of masada tunes since we play a Masada tribute band once in a while here in Ireland. Have a midifile for Tannaim, or pdf of the score if youre interested if anybody else is doing this type of transcription work would be great to trade notes andrea
