Welcome to the Board Mike!
Glad to see that my wikiwork has some intended consequences. Please let me know what you think of the Wikipedia entry (although it's still a work in progress). Any contributions, corrections, debates or comments are always welcome (probably best submitted in the 'Zorn on wikipedia' post here or contribute directly to the article). Hopefully it will reach the level of Good (or even Feature) Article status in the not too distant future.

Howdy. Found the board from the wikipedia entry. Clever idea, linking it there. I discovered the boards (today) via Wikipedia ... and I discovered Zorn, well, partly thanks to you, I suspect, Mike, because I've been working a lot through what I assume are your reviews on Amazon.com. Great job ... although you like your Zorn rougher than I do, you've been a big influence on my buying. I actually owned The Big Gundown and Spillane when they came out, what with my being a somewhat pretentious teenager at the time, but they didn't make a big impression ... well, not in a positive way, anyhow! About a year ago, though, I read about the Masada project on Head-Fi, and that's when I tuned back in. It looks as though I ordered Masada Guitars, Live in Seville, and three volumes from the Book of Angels (volumes 2, 5 & 6) all at the same time. Since then I've been buying sporadically, and am looking forward to getting the Naked City boxed set from my sister-in-law at Christmas.

That's what I hear, but I've been very wary of Zorn's heavier material. While my tastes do range from Zappa to Messiaen, Foetus to Metallica, what I've heard of the more abrasive stuff (e.g. At The Mountains of Madness) always strikes me as too damned noisy. I even found the recent Ribot Book of Angels too wild, and I would say that was fairly conservative by comparison.
Still, I'm up for the challenge: and let's be honest, Zorn fans are eventually going to have to get all three of the boxed sets one way or another.
Speaking of which, does anyone know if they're going to re-release the first ten Masada albums? I'd rather hold out for a Tzadik set than start buying the original releases, which are now pretty scarce. Even DMG is out of stock of three of them.

I reckon they will eventually, makes sense....Zorn owns the rights to them I think.....

I remember Naked City, Torture Garden in particular, having an impact on the metal scene. Painkiller too, this was mainly due to Earache Records releasing the stuff. I started with these acts and advanced from there too......

Great job ... although you like your Zorn rougher than I do, you've been a big influence on my buying. Wow, that's really great to hear-- I started writing reviews simply because I got sick of the usual blinding praise or damning that shows up on Amazon and provides 0 useful information, although curiously I try not to buy much downtown/improv stuff through Amazon, preferring to work with Downtown Music Gallery. Before I started listening to Zorn, I was (and still am) into all sorts of different things, not the least of which at the time was free jazz and post punk stuff... I think this is why I tend towards Zorn's more out works, I'm quite into the free improv stuff. OTOH, I love a great pop song and while I gave "The Gift" a 3 star review, it's blossomed into one of my favorite Zorn albums. Anyway, thanks for the kind words, it's really gratifying to hear I'm offering some good advice. Naked City's debut changed my life and opened my eyes to what's out there-- if your preference is to Zorn's more melodic works, you'll find lots to enjoy.

I buy all my Tzadik stuff from DMG via the Tzadik website as well. I also write Amazon reviews, for the UK. If you're interested, you can check out my review of The Big Gundown here: www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Gundown-John-Zorn/dp/B00004W3KY/ref=cm_cr-mr-titleI very briefly reviewed for a rock magazine once, and I find that the good thing about reviewing on Amazon is that the only requirement is to give a buyer enough information to form a buying decision; that's what reviews should be about, and most magazines today don't "get" that.

Hello. This is my first post to the forum. I found it via a reference link to my blog in a HolgerregloH post. Well I guess it's fitting to start by replying to this topic. My first contact with Zorn was Grand Guignol (Naked City). It was like a revelation. Closely after followed Absinthe, The Bribe and Ritual. Now I collect everything related to John Zorn. I can for sure call myself a Zorn aficionado.
