As the 'recent Zorn purchases' is probably one of the most popular threads here I was just wondering what peoples first JZ purchase was?
For me it was The Big Gundown, closely followed by Naked City and Spy vs Spy. But I first became intrigued by JZ on hearing his horn arrangements on the Violent Femmes album "Hallowed Ground".
How did others find out about the downtown maestro?

My first introduction to Zorn, ( as a Death Metal / Grind freak back in the late 80s! ), was Torture Garden. It totally blew my mind, and is still one of my favourite albums.
That was closely followed by Painkillers Guts Of A Virgin, and then the Zorn onslaught ensued, and I got totally into all aspects of his work. Other early releases for me as I remember were Spy Vs Spy, Cobra : Tokyo Operations 1994, Naked City and Absinthe.
Zorn, along with Zappa and Miles Davis, blew my musical world apart, and made me realise as a teenager, that there was alot more out there than Metal!! I havent looked back sunce.....

Like a lot of others, I got into Zorn via Patton. In fact, I discovered both at the same time. Before buying anything from Patton, I downloaded Disco Volante and I came across this eponymous track from Locus Solus.
So, my first Zorn has to be Locus Solus, then I bought it one week later, along with Kristallnacht and Duras Duchamp (I didn't know a thing about those) and you can bet I wasn't expecting something THAT varied from a single artist !

I downloaded some live bootlegs from DIME because I had a friend who kept mentioning how good he was... I couldn't find one that clicked with me until I downloaded a Bar Kokhba live show (mainly because I was already a Ribot fan). After that I went out and bought The Circle Maker as my first purchase. Now I've got 30+ albums and a similar number of live boots...

Yeah, Locus and Kristallnacht came to me pretty early on too. However, I didnt hear Duras : Duchamp until this year, such is the amount of material to discover!

Introduced to Zorn by the first Mr.Bungle I bought Naked City, Naked City "Heretic" and Painkiller. Now I have over 50 Zorn Cds (all Filmworks...) and 40+ other Tzadik Releases. The most are from the New Japan series.

As for Tzadik output, I have more Composers Series than anything, followed by New Japan.....

My first Zorn record was also "Locus Solus", which is definitely a tough introduction to his work. I never liked it, nor do I now. However, that led to a long-term Zorn fever. Now I own almost all of his records, except for possibly three or four, maybe less.

I first heard Zorn back in '95, a big year for having my head spun around. I was 13 and getting rabid in my exploration of music. Wasn't easy in a small town but of course Zorn was a link to all kinds of fun. As with many, it happened through Mr. Bungle. I first heard snippets of The Big Gundown, Naked City, Spillane and Locus Solus in the same evening. I picked up Naked City, the only one I could find at the time and then it wasn't until Filmworks V & VI that I picked up some more. After that I was inhaling Zorn and anything else I could find - spending every last cent on excursions to Minneapolis, a two hour drive at the time but the nearest place to browse for decent records. Glad I had older friends with vehicles.

Howdy. Found the board from the wikipedia entry. Clever idea, linking it there.
First heard Zorn when I was 16 and big into alternative music-- this guy Fred who worked at Brass City Records in Waterbury, CT (highly recommended for anyone passing through....) played me Naked City. I wasn't quite ready for it.
For several years after that, I kept hearing bits and pieces of Zorn, but knowing he had an extensive catalog, I avoided him. Then I was seeing a movie at an indie theater just outside of Boston and they played Naked City before the show. I was hooked.
Several years later, I've got well over 100 Zorn records (his entire catalog to my awareness) and my wife calls him "the other woman" in response to my occasional runs down to Manhattan to see him. Next trip for me is the Bar Kokhba shows in a couple weeks. I can't wait, I've not yet seen Bar Kokhba.

Welcome to the forum, Mike :-)
I'll be coming down from Mass. for the Bar Kokhba shows, too. Maybe we'll be on the same train.
Did you see that Masada String Trio is playing in Boston in a few months?

I DID just see that the String Trio is coming... clearly, I'll be there. AFAIK, last time Zorn came to Boston was a string performance (if I recall it was "Necronomicom", "Amor Fou" and "Walpurgisnacht") at the Gardner. Much as I love going to NYC, it's nice to have a local show.
I'm meeting up with a friend and taking Metro North down from Stamford-- much better than any of the Amtrak trains from Boston IMHO...

I tend to have a lot of Acela trips paid for by other people and then I stack up enough rewards points to travel for free when I come down for concert weekends. Can't really argue with that.
My brother bought us tickets to the Masada String Trio show as a Chanukah present for me... he is not really familiar with JZ's music and we generally don't agree on much, musically. So if you see a woman really enjoying herself with a guy who looks kind of unhappy and confused, that's probably us...
