The first mention I can see of an official Masada Marathon is the 2010 concerts at St Annes Warehouse on February 17 & 18 2010
Although the ZornFest at Yoshi's Jazz Club on March 10-14, 2009 predates this and can be considered one of the first.
I'm sure I've heard of other multi-Masada line-ups happening even earlier than this, possibly at The Stone, but can't find any details - any ideas?

Feb 2010 was at the Abrons, not St. Anne's Warehouse, for the record. St. Anne's hosted the Dreamers premiere and Essential Cinema a couple of years earlier. I know of a few big Masada shows before that, though. My first JZ concert was a 4-band Masada lineup in September 2006 - does that count as a marathon? What's the cut-off between concert and marathon? A NYT review: www.nytimes.com/2006/09/12/arts/music/12zorn.html?_r=0My 3rd, 4th and 5th JZ concerts were in Rome, July 2007. (I'm imagining some internet denizen interjecting: "That escalated quickly.") IIRC it was called "Complete Masada" - a total of nine Masada bands in three nights, but not called a "marathon" AFAIK. There was also a similar Masada lineup in Barcelona the same week. In 2010 there was also a Masada Marathon at Montreal Jazz fest in addition to the two nights at the Abrons... but the Abrons was a few months earlier. The Abrons might have been the first one officially referred to by Zorn as a "marathon" (and is referred to as such in the NYT review: www.nytimes.com/2010/02/20/arts/music/20zorn.html ). I bet Mike will know something earlier though. Maybe at Tonic?

Thanks Sarah,
That fills in the gaps somewhat...
If I count Song Project and Moonchild as two seperate concerts.. cause we had to go directly to jail and not pass go... I am looking foward to my 10th (which will also be my first Marathon) through to 13th JZ concerts in Adelaide

I bet Mike will know something earlier though. Maybe at Tonic? I would suggest that the Masada Book II Premier would qualify. 4 days, 2 sets each at Tonic, maybe half a dozen acts doing 1-3 songs each. That was December 8-11, 2004. My first date with my wife was the next day. It was a life changing week for me. I'm presuming we'd leave out the 50th birthday performances the year before that.

I would have picked the 2004 series too. I believe that JZ began to think of his iPod concerts (that's how the 2010 Masada Marathon in Milan was announced) then. I was given the audience recordings of the 4 nights shortly after and upped them on Dimeadozen (where they were probalby shared in the first place) sometime ago, so this world premiere can be heard.
