Zorn is fairly new to me a friend of mine has introduced me to his work and I find it vast. It interestingly goes in many directions, just wonderful. Zorn's body of work is huge, so much to enjoy. Back to The Stone, I too hope to go soon as I don't live to far (NJ).

Its cool that you are just getting into Zorns work, and you are right, it is huge, and quite daunting! Damn exciting though, cos there are so many works to choose from! I remember when I first started getting into his work, and that was the days before the internet! Having to rely on mail order and record labels and catalogues! Add that to the fact that virtually none of his releases got released over here too, so each disc had import fees to pay.....!

I recently wrote an article on Zorn for a jazz magazine. It could be useful for newcomers since it deals with Zorn as a cult artist and highlights some of the most remarkable records (subjectively, of course). It's in Spanish, but if someone speaks the language and would like to take a look, just ask and I'll scan it.

Risky is the right word to use too, as alot of the time those Tzadik OBI - Blurbs do not seem too accurate! Many a time Ive read one and immediately bought the cd it was describing, only to find I dont agree with the write up at all! Cool about your article though, i find that now, in the internet age, others opinions and reviews on Zorns work are far more helpful and insightful, for those just starting out, or indeed us veterans treading new ground. A good site is here www.omnology.com/zorn01.html, Im sure most of you would have been there before, but it is one of very few Zorn fan sites. And, whilst I disagree with some of his opinions, it is a good detailed site and very worthwhile....

The Stone is fucking awesome. I've only been once so far, to see Zorn himself. Where abouts in NJ do you live, robin? I'm up in Morris County.

Cool...Im still pissed I missed the Bailey tribute at the Barbican. Although I did see Moonchild and a premiere of a new composition the following night ( long title and as yet unreleased, closest point of reference would probably be Rituals ), which was incredible.
.....just checked the programme and the title of that second piece performed was conducted by Brad Lubman and called -
Evocation Of A Neophyte And How The Secrets Of The Black Arts Were Revealed Unto Her By The Demon Baphomet

I've got a recording of the Bailey tribute at the Barbican I think, a BBC Jazz on 3 thing. Have you heard it?

Yeah, I heard it when it was broadcast. Great stuff. But watching free improvisation live and listening to it at home really are two different things IMO, and it wouldve been great to see Milford Graves doing his thing! That guy is incredible......

I got a ticket for the Moonchild performance, but I was too lazy and stupid to sort transport out.
