BTW caminante, have you checked out From Silence To Sorcery yet? That has a piece for 13 tuned drums and kick drum, played by William Winant. It kicks ass, if you dig Dark River Id say youd dig that too....

I'm not sure that I deserve or need ten, because I only have about forty CDs from the Zorniverse. Here, though, are some of the current standouts:
Sanhedrin Masada Guitars Madness, Love and Mysticism Book of Angels VIII: Volac Taboo and Exile Six Litanies for Heliogabalus Cartoon S/M
Among the albums that I find weakest (which is at least as informative) I'd list Heretic, IAO, Voices in the Wilderness and the Koby Israelite Book of Angels disc.

Howdy!
So I've got as close to a complete Zorn catalog as I can find (every so often I discover something new...) and have actually thought a lot in these lines with my undertaking the creation of a Zorn Primer for a friend. I've actually been listening to the JZ catalog chronologically and taking notes to be able to provide a good overview to his career.
Anyway, my top 10, excluding any really recent releases (i.e. the past 6-9 months or so)-- I haven't had time for them to settle in yet. In more or less order (although list is always subject to change...). I'm including everythng where Zorn was a lead performer or composer.
1. Naked City: s/t 2. Kristaalnacht 3. Electric Masada: 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 4 4. Six Litanies for Heliogalabalus 5. The Big Gundown 6. Magick 7. Masada String Trio: Azazel 8. Naked City: Radio 9. Masada: 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 7 10. Filmworks XIII: Invitation to a Suicide
When I generated this list, I basically looked at my collection and scribbled down anything that I thought was just head and shoulders above the rest. Just missing the cut (without thought to order):
- Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet: Voodoo - Masada: Tet/9 - Bar Kokhba - Buck Jam Tonic - Masada: Live at Tonic 2001 - Rashanim: Masada Rock - Electric Masada: At the Mountains of Madness. - I.A.O. - New Traditions in East Asian Bar Bands - Filmworks X: In the Mirror of Maya Deren
I realize I totally cheated and actually named 20 albums here, so while I'm at it, I'll give honorable mention to the Gift as the record that I truly adore but never think of in this regard (though I listen to it endless), John Patton's Minor Swing as the absolute best performance as a sideman by Zorn and Erik Friedlander's Volac and The Dreamers as the most likely recent records to usurp a place on here.
(edit)
Oh! I saw someone else list their weakest Zorn records-- no doubt about this:
Mystic Fugu Orchestra: Zohar
Like I said, I've got a thoroughly extensive Zorn catalog, there's very little I don't love and only one record I think is awful and that's "Zohar".

Okay, so here's the ten best for me. I like most of Zorn output, except Songs from the hermetic theatre and Zohar..Also I don't really like Israelite's and Cracow's installments of the Book of Angels. Anyway, these are my favourites and the ones I keep coming back to:
Magick Naked City Electric Masada: At the Mountains of Madness Book of Angels 1: Azazel Book of Angels 8: Volac Painkiller: Execution Ground The Circle Maker Mysterium 50th Birthday vol.1: Masada String Trio 50th Birthday vol.11: Bar Kokhba
I can't decide wich of the Filmworks I like most, so I let that out. I hope I can add to this list Lucifer very soon.. I'm still waiting for it, as well as The Rain Horse and The Dreamers. Anyway, it's a good start for 2008...
See you at Paris this June!
