I'm trying to plan my trip to NYC (all the way from Oz) in September for the JZ@60 celebrations. I can only spend about a week in the Big Apple and want to make the best of it but getting details of the gigs is still pretty vague. At present I can see the Johshua Light show on the 14th and Masada Marathon on the 15th are scheduled. I'll probably base my itinery around these.
Any assistance or advice on other shows around these dates or on suitable accomodation options would be greatly appreciated.

DISE (Determined I'll See Enough) NYC is pretty easy to spend time in and you should have no shortage of opportunities to see great live music. Some music venues I enjoy: The Stone (http://www.thestonenyc): Of course. Roulette (http://roulette.org/): A bit further afield in Brooklyn, but with an excellent performance calendar. Jazz Standard (http://jazzstandard.com/): Finest mainstream jazz club in the city (with an excellent dinner menu to boot!). The fantastic Mingus Big Band plays every Monday. The Iridium (http://theiridium.com/): Aggressive mainstream jazz. Proximity to Times Square makes it more expensive than it should be. I feel annoyed a the staff every time I go there. The Village Vanguard (http://villagevanguard.com/): A small room where so many legendary shows were recorded. The Blue Note (http://www.bluenote.net/newyork/index.shtml): Another mainstream jazz venue, with occasionally more modern fare. New York City is also of course filled with excellent museums and sites, I could recommend literally dozens, though the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art are what I usually recommend to folks who have little or no experience in NYC. If you're comfortable taking subways, it only matters where you stay with respect to the relative safety of the neighborhood and comfort of the hotel. Most of Manhattan has gentrified to a level that shocks someone like me who grew up with it. That being said, I think you'll find accessibility easiest closer to the heart of things. Of course, you'll pay a premium for this. I'll PM you with some further hotel thoughts. |

They played the Joshua Light thing on September 14th last year, you may want to double check your source on that one.
Facebook has a good listing of shows, although they are still changing/adding them and I don't know if many of them are set in stone. This is what they've got on FB:

Other gigs in that time span will have to wait, most of the interesting stuff is not announced this far in advance!
September is unfortunately quite an expensive time for NYC hotels. I usually go on tripadvisor.com and do a search, then take the highest-rated hotel that's in my price range. Sometimes I do Hotwire or Priceline if I am really unable to find a good enough price, but those are kinda risky - it's an art and a science using those... anyway, I'm happy to help with advice when you narrow down the exact dates.

His Facebook page now has shows listed on the 23rd, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th, so that is looking like a pretty good week to pick!

OK I'm booked... 25 hour flight in to get there (does 23,000 miles by air beat 1,300 km by bus, Sarah?). Probably in too late to get there for the Filmworks performance on the 20th but will be in for everything for the next week or so... unfortunately I leave before the Sakimoto duet... thanks Mike and Sarah for ALL your advice... If your in for some Australian cultural experience I have a special treat planned for after the Game Pieces concert...

25 hours probably puts you in the running for an award, yes  Especially if it's in coach! I mentioned this a long time ago but I'll bring it up again since we're getting closer and we have a better idea of dates... (although maybe I'm too late and people already booked hotels?). What would people think about a group of us renting an apartment for that last week in September? Say Monday to Monday and you'd get the shows on the 23rd, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29. Or if there are live sets on the 20th-21st we could do Friday to Monday... Rates would depend on how many of us were there, but it seems like if we got 3-4 people in a 2BR apartment we could get something nice in a good location for less than the cost of, e.g., a Holiday Inn type hotel. Probably staying in a hostel is cheaper, but for people like me who aren't comfortable with hostels... this might be a very affordable way to go. I used Homeaway.com for a stay in Paris earlier this year and I was really happy with the results... they have lots of listings in NYC too. |

Beers are on me Mike... As long as it's not Fosters... It's Australian for p**s! And us Aussies won't go near it. I am partial to a good Samuel Adams though... What's your choice - It's my shout mate!

There are a pair of excellent bars (one a few blocks from the Stone) with excellent beer that I frequent on a fairly regular basis. We'll do better than Fosters and Sam Adams, I can assure you of that. ;-)

Our Trip to New York (Masada Marathon) is fixed. We stay for one week and till the Concert in the Anthologie Film Archive. There are any Zorn Concerts in this week also? We very happy to come to New york again-- great time, some users from this list maybe also in the kimmel university??

Mike Stack and I will both be at the Kimmel for the Masada Marathon (along with some other Zorn-loving friends who aren't on this forum. And my boss and her husband, because I'm a Zornvangelist and I told them it was the concert of the year and they needed to see it.)
DISEman and I will also be there for the Anthology Film Archive concerts.
Don't know about anything else between the 15th and the 21st. I am going home on the 16th and coming back on the 20th, and with no Zorn concerts on the 20th I bought a ticket to see Bill Frisell & co at Lincoln Center for the early set and I'm hoping to get to the Stone for the 10PM set (Evan Parker & Sylvie Courvoisier).
