I was just wondering what some specific similarities you've noticed between John's music and others.
The Hiding and Seeking soundtrack has many aspects especially in its basslines and percussion that remind me of Joe Hisaishi's soundtrack to Fireworks, a movie directed by Takeshi Kitano.
In The Crucible's Witchfinder there is a bass riff that reminds me of a violin and guitar riff from a song that Secret Chiefs performs live called Brazen Serpent.

Great thread Thymian.. i was actually thinking about starting a similar one myself.. it's good to talk about similarities and influences on Zorn's music, also because this could lead to discover other great music we didn't know. Apart from the obvious cd notes of Naked City's Radio, which lists a few dozens of direct influences on JZ at the early 1990s stage, of course 20 years later the list has to be a lot a lot longer... recently listening to some 60s music by guitarist Gabor Szabo, especially his Bacchanal album, and couldn't help noticing very strong similairites with the Bar Kokhba guitar/percussion driven sound, it sounds like a lot of his playing has been channeled by Ribot in the Masada context in some interview that was posted in here i think, i heard JZ mentioning Bert Kampfert as something he is seriously digging, but i mean, we are talking about a guy who got rid of the kitchen in his flat to make room for more records
