Masada Quintet featuring Joe Lovano: Stolas: The Book of Angels Volume 12 [#7375] For this very special release in The Book of Angels series, Zorn has brought together five of the most acclaimed musicians in modern jazz to perform nine of his most distinctive and lyrical compositions. Truly a jazz supergroup, these five master musicians explore Zorn's beautiful and exotic tunes with profound melodic and harmonic knowledge and a depth of feeling that is a joy to hear. One of the most breathtaking CDs in the entire Masada series—a touch of the sublime from the beautiful new Masada Quintet!

In the liner notes of Filmworks XXI, John Zorn wrote : "The next CD in the Book of Angels series will be the super band of Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Uri Caine, Greg Cohen and Joey Baron".

Wow! This will be very interesting, I would never have expected Joe Lovano to play with Zorn in any project....

by saying "featuring Joe Lovano" I figured Zorn would play on all tracks and joe would be on one, not the other way around.

Then most of the tunes are from book one What do you mean ? As far as I know, these tunes have not been recorded by the original Masada quartet, nor by any other Masada group (trio, Bar Kokhba, electric).

Good record, I've been playing it a lot since i first got it. Lovano doesn't quite fit in and makes the music a bit less Ornette does Klezmer and more the First Miles quintet does Klezmer, but that's not necessarily a criticism.
I wrote a detailed review over on Amazon for anyone interested.

It is a great listen though, but I am getting really bored of Masada releases!

Sounds quite complimentary actually, and a rather accurate observation as well on your part. I think one of the reasons I enjoy Stolas so much is that it reminds me of the early 60's quintet and Adderley's Something Else album.
