Aqua is excellent, very jazzy. It's quite a different release to anything else I have with the possible exception of Dharma. The last track is one I play to people first if they ask about Merzbow (not that many do!!)

I was watching green wheels which was just below it in the listings. Not sure how much it went for but more than I was willing to cough up.

I havent heard another Merz album like it, noticably different and lots of surprises in there. Definitely recommended, I wish I had bought it earlier..... Checked out Merzbear too, and enjoyed it. I read a review somewhere and the guy said he thought this was the best of the Important Records "Merz..." series so far - On first listen I disagree with that. Of course I need to check it out more, but it didnt jump out at me like Merzbird and Merzbuddha did....Watch this space I guess....

"Debric Dress" with Merzbow / Carlos Giffoni / Jim O´Rourke - cool 52min track, from totally brutal walls of destructive noise to beautiful minimal synthetic interplay, analog drone and shifting alien electronics

Ecobondage arrived today. havent checked it out yet though.... Well, checked it out. Its fucking great. Very subtle and bassy, and it never gets too out of control. Reminded me alot of Zorns minimalist works, and Mamoru Fujiedas The Night Chant. That said, it stands alone.....Lots of percussion and noises ala' Antimonument. The two 30 minute plus pieces , Ecobondage and Ha Ha Ho Bari ( Mari ) really work being that long, unlike some of his other half hour works. They both really kept me interested. This weekend I have heard two albums in Aqua Necromancer and Econbondage that have raised the Merzbow bar for sure.

PappaWas,
Have you heard Dharma, that's another "different" Merzbow. In a way similar to Aqua but also different. Certainly these two CD's seem to be thought about and composed rather than just seeing what happens in the recording session.

I agree with you, it is another very "different" side of Merzbow, although that difference only jumped out at me after a few listens with Dharma, whereas with Aqua Nercromancer it was instantaneous yknow? I know what you mean with the composing / improvising thing. I found this to be true with Ecobondage also. It almost sounds like minimalist contemporary classical, as opposed to typical Merz / noise / sound sculpture. On a lesser scale Id say Amlux gives that feeling also. And of course the more odviously structured records like Merzbeat, Senmaida, etc..... That said, Im not sure id say I prefer things that way. I find myself craving all aspects of his work at different times. I do refute people saying all Merzbow albums sound the same. Without wanting to sound too pretentious or geeky, after a while you come to notice alot of subtleties in his work, but obviously this comes over time and different releases. If what you hear on first listen doesnt appeal to you, then you wont move on to find the nuances within......( am i a nerd? ) Anyway, yep, Dharma is a great album.....!!!

Aqua Necromancer is like without a doubt one of the best things he's ever released. Better than Door Opens. Another hot disc from that time is Springharp, with a similar 'rock sampling' angle. Both playful records, very colorful tonally speaking.
Dharma is 'the' early laptop disc also without a doubt. I remember reading someone saying they didn't mind the album until the last track which didn't work for them. Shame to them, cos that last track is sommin else.. The only place where a similar sound is heard as at the end of that last track, is the second track on the Merzbow-Napalmed split, which is a focused take on that particular timbre.
Merzbear, Merzbear, Merzbear. And what I think about the Merz series. For me, Merzbeat is just all over the shop, v lukewarm about that one, the music doesn't go anywhere. Merzbird is an improvement, but is one of the more uninspired discs from that era - there's nothing interesting about the long track. This is an example of the way repetition can be used to no effect. I very much like track 1. Track 6 to a lesser extent. But nothing else is noteworthy. Merzbuddha is a bit of an odd one out. It's not really a Merzbow disc. Track 1 works really well. Track 2 doesn't, and track 3 is somewhere in between. It's interesting as a step back from the normal Merz approach. Merzbuta has some fun moments and some very stupid ones - eg. the last track, what a piece of shit. Track 2 is gold. Track 4 ain't v good. Track 3 is just funny, it's ok, but way too long for the quality of that beat. Track 1 is a strong start. So again, this is a bit of a mixed bag. Now Merzbear.. Track 1 is pleasant, establishes a less distinctly repetitive structure (ie. the mix doesn't favour the repetition), a warmer sound, less edge than on other Merz records, more like drinking a milkshake. Track 2 is the most like stuff from the other Merz-series discs, and it sucks the hardest here. Nothing special about that track, the loop does nothing for me (except repeat). Now tracks 3 and 4, we're moving back to the promises established by track 1, but exceeding them. Beautiful stuff, strong structures, *almost* cutting off more than it can chew in track 3, but the little twist at the end substantiates that almost excessive time - I can listen to it w no problems.
Maybe that;s what someone might not like about Merzbear - it's just smooth sailing, an easy listen, but very well crafted. Merzbuddha is next for me in terms of thoughtfulness about crafting. The others are just like a bull in a china shop, which can be a good thing to see, can be funny, but ultimtely crashes and burns. I think they boast his most clumsy moments, in between some good moments.
Thanks for enduring my opionionionionioinoinoininoinoinoinoin.
