All the Avant discs are officially out of print. Harras turns up on Ebay a bit but the prices of this disc (and other Avant discs) is escalating as they become harder to find. Considering that Avant was curated by JZ it shouldn't be that hard to rerelease these discs on Tzadik. Other options are to search the net for online stores that may still have stock.

Not that long King... Sometimes its a bit hard thinking of something relevant but usually something suggests itself... sorta like improvising...

OK... the JZ wikipedia article has had a peer review.. I've done some tidying up and added a few more quotes and I'm gradually working my way through adding JZ album articles... (there are 46 in the [[Category:John Zorn albums]] and rising... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Zornen.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Zorn_discographyHow can you help I hear you ask? Whats your ABSOLUTE favourite John Zorn album??? If its already on wikipedia then think what info you can add.. If its not - add the album - its easier than you think... Thanks for your contributions in anticipation DISE (Damn I'm So Exhausted)

Hey Red...
Thanks for these... I've added them to the JZ discography except for 2000 Songs - I'm not sure of the release date but think that I've worked out that its part of the "Paridiso" 20 CD box set (which I added). Please let me know if you have any more ifo or corrections for this release.
Also added the Seigen Ono release Comme De Garcon (volumes 1 & 2) and Maria & Maria. Again release dates are a bit sketchy but I put in what I can divulge from the release dates?
Whats your thought on the Seigen Ono releases? Any particular ones worth investing in?
Cheers,

Hello!
you are right, i have one cd from SD-2000 Songs-Saidera Records.
On this CD is The Cut 20. - She is She--Zorn plays Alto sax.
But i like all these Seigen Ono Records-its nice and relax. But in reality i prefer Naked City, Masada,Big Gundown...
The CD Maria Maria i dont' have.
For the Wiki-
CD Sax Legends--Volume 2// Paddle Wheel records
The first Cut/Blues for 52nd Street is one of the best Sax Tune from John zorn-a little bit too short.
On cut 3--he plays also.
Im lookin for the Volume one...
cheers

Hey red...
I got a copy of The Colossal Saxophone Sessions (1993) on Evidence records which is a 2CD re-release of both volumes of the Sax Legends discs with a GREAT version of Wayne Shorter's composition "Devil's Island" featuring Zorn alongside Lee Konitz.
Worth the price of admission alone.
I wonder if JZ will ever do another "standards" recording?
At least I hope that he might release some live Naked City "cover versions". I've heard of some bootleg live recodings that feature NC doing jazz Morricone etc. If NC Live Vol 1 is anything to go by there must be some other great concert recordings of this band.

OK I'm almost ready to start adding some soundbites to the JZ wikipedia article....
I'd appreciate some input from this list as to what selections should be featured under the various headings - remembering that the policy on free use % means the soundbite will generally be 10-15 seconds (or slightly more if its a long piece) .... Although it means that Naked City's "hardcore miniatures" are too short to feature...
I'm interested in what the board thinks is representative of:
Early Compositions - maybe something from "cobra"?
Breakthrough recordings - What from the Morricone project
Jazz Interpeter - ?Sonny Clark?
Film Music
Hardcore
Concert Music
Masada Books
Music Romance
50th Bithday
Recent Works
Input and debate would be gratefully received

Tough call, DISE!
Firstly, real shame about not being able to include and Torture Garden, as I feel this would be essential!
Anyway, I'll give you my thoughts on your list -
Early Compositions - I would say Cobra. I thought Classic Guide, then Locus, then First Recordings, but I would say Cobra overall represents his early, file card work best.
Breakthrough recordings - Anything from The Big Gundown or Spillane! ( or TG, of course! )
Jazz Interpeter - I'm not sure what is meant by this? If you mean how Zorn interprets Jazz, then I vote for Spy vs Spy.
Film Music - Cynical Hysterie Hour! I'm not sure of a single score that sums his entire Film Works up..
Hardcore - Torture Garden, Naked City, Guts Of A Virgin, Moonchild.
Concert Music - Necronomicon, Rituals, Madness, Love And Mysticism.
Masada Books - Original Quartet material, Electric Masada, MST.
Music Romance - Music For Children
50th Bithday - Graves / Zorn duo, Painkiller
Recent Works - The Dreamers, Alhambra
All a matter of taste!

early compositions : sure Cobra is the most well-known, but I would rather go for The Book of Heads (1978) or even Christabel (1972) which is one year earlier than the "First recordings 1973".
breakthrough : I agree with the Big Gundown as being the most well-known breakthrough record (you can add a sample from Tre Nel 5000 if you want people to hear an actual Zorn composition, albeit Morricone-inspired, rather than a a mere Morricone cover.
jazz interpreter : Spy vs. Spy is the most well-known
film music : Filmworks V : Tears of Ecstasy (simply because it is a favorite of mine), yet, if you want to stay with popular ones, Cynical Hysterie Hour, and above all, Invitation to a suicide.
hardcore : I would say Moonchild but it's not genuine hardcore music, so either Lang Tch'e or Torture Garden.
concert music : one of the string quartets. perhaps Cat O'Nine Tails, even if my preference goes for Memento Mori.
masada books : electric masada (masada at its best, along with Asmodeus)
music romance : something from taboo and exile
50th birthday : some collaboration... I agree with Zorn/Graves
Recent : Filmworks XXII (The Last Supper) was awsome, as well as the four Moonchild albums. Yes, you gotta put some Moonchild from Six Litanies for Heliogabalus.

OK - In tribute to JZ for his 60th (and inspired by my NYC trip) I've done a major cleanup of the John Zorn Wikipedia entry. I'm not quite finished but have a look and see what you think...
There are major reductions to some of the sections which are now redundant because I've also worked a lot more info into the album articles. I've tried to thematically cover most of the major areas of his work without sounding too much of a "fanboy" (yes - I took note of that) and (almost) every assertion is referenced.
I'm still working on it and gotta figure how to add soundbites. Comments from the Board of Zorn welcome.
