Essence just released Camouflage. The normal edition is limited to 800 copies and costs 16$, the limited edition is limited to 149 copies and costs 50$. The limited edition also contains a DTS 5.1 version of the album on CDR, including an exclusive remix. "A bit distant from Sha Mo 3000’s pulsing, often rhythmic strategies or the recent albums featuring freestyle drums by Masami Akita himself, Camouflage plays by the more straight MERZBOW rules, going back to his comfort zone of audio barbarism." essence-music.com/releases/camouflage_ess012.htmThe track titles are funky.

Camouflage lOoks like a cool release, and thank goodness he's left the drums out! Listened to the 2 samples on the website - track 2 is sounding great. But the bastard has reused FID disc 2 track 1 on the first track! Like track 1 of Here being a rip off of FID's disc 1 track 2... argh, it pi$$es me off!
I've had a listen to Dead Leaves, I think it's great! It sounds similar to Camouflage actually, and Tombo, so this is the newer post free-drum approach. Cam adds up to quite a length, so the tracks must be all over 20mins, or else a more extended track somewhere in there..

I also ordered the limited box set edition. These Essence release are always nice eyecatchers. I haven't listened to the samples on the website, but I sure hope Camouflage defers from the sounds on Here, as this was for me the most disappointing Merz release in 08.

Theaccolade of my least favourite 08 Merz would have to go to either Arijigoku or ( now ) Dead Leaves...

God that looks cool.
Dead Leaves is growing on me. I had a listen at work this afternoon and it's getting better.

Here was a good album! Track 2 of it is excellent I reckon!! Shame track 1 lifts from FID 1:2, but other than that, a fine piece of music..
Other good 2008 material - Higanbana, if it counts. Eucalypse would be my pick probably, though that's quite a conservative pick..
Keep trying w Dead Leaves Pappa - what's the problem w it??

Keep trying w Dead Leaves Pappa - what's the problem w it?? Just didn't grab me at all on first listen. Nothing stood out, and the overallimpression I got was that it was, well, kinda "throwaway"? I cannot pick out sounds / techniques he has used on previous recordings like you seem to be able to. I take each release on its own merits... Of course I intend to give it more listens, and it was unfair for me to state my impression on here after only one excursion... I think another factor also, was that I played Tombo the same day, which I loved. A nice old skool blast, and kinda left DL behind ( for that day at least! ) When I check DL out again, I'll post my thoughts...

Tombo is fantastic, the best album in recent times. Hodosan has been raising some good opinions and I think it's also v good (maybe there IS hope for the drumming on 13 Jap Birds disc 1!), just Tombo's that bit more directed and complex. I ordered the normal ver of Camouflage so look forward to that next up. I relayed the info to the Essence people about the FID 2:1 used on 1st track of Camouflage which they mentioned to Masami and who responded with "that is different track. not the same." Hehe. It's a good little hit of Merz at the moment!

Looks neat. Any of you guys ever ordered directly from Important? I'm interested in one of those subscriptions, though I heard their ordering system is a little weird.

The ordering system is not really wierd as such, you basically select an item and then they get back to you with details ( whether it is in stock, shipping etc. ) That is as far as I got, as Last Of Analog Sessions was out of stock!

Updated info from the Important Records site -
MERZBOW BIRD BOX & SUBSCRIPTION PRE-ORDERS
The Merzbow "13 Japanese Birds" 13 CD subscription & bamboo box set is now available for pre-order
ABOUT THE CD SERIES: Merzbow's 13 Japanese Birds is a 13 month/13 CD set that begins January 2009 and ends February 2010. These are pressed in a limited edition of 1000 and once they are sold out they will not be repressed. This series was inspired by Olivier Messaien's Catalogue D'Oiseaux.
ABOUT THE BAMBOO BOX: These are hand crafted, numbered, screen printed and constructed of organic imported Moso bamboo. The box holds all 13 cds and they are painstakingly crafted, one a day, by a Massachusetts craftsman. When your box is ready we will ship it to you along with your CD for the month. Boxes will ship in the chronological order in which they are purchased. We expect to ship about 30 a month. Click on the image to view the assembly/materials slide show.
ABOUT THE PAINTINGS: With the purchase of a bamboo box you have the option of including an original acrylic on bamboo painting by Masami Akita (Merzbow). His work can be seen on the cover of the LP released via Important titled Minazo 2. It's a little known fact that Masami Akita studied painting at Tamagawa University in Japan and has continued to produce paintings. These paintings are not available without the purchase of a bamboo box.
** due to the time required to produce each box (& the future collector value of the boxes ) we reserve the right, if neccessary, to limit the number of boxes per order **
