I am friends w/ Jamie and he allows audio and video recording, I just sent him an email inquiring about John Zorns view of this, since I'll most likely attend the "Dreamers" on May 17, 2008, Jamie is hooking me up!

Then what was up with the guy with the huge microphones in the center of the balcony for the Bar Kokhba shows, there's no way Zorn didn't see him........ Not sure who "Bar Kokhba" is, but, perhaps the "leader" isn't Zorn, then he typically would not have the final say...such as...Charlie Hunter doesn't allow video, however Bobby Previte encourages it, therefore, this is 100% approved! www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BFAQZSU51wwww.youtube.com/watch?v=TOzHPxODz5sI shot these on my old camera, got a better one since May 2007, I basically film every cool freaky jazz act that hit The Stone Church www.thestonechurch.com

I've requested permission from John to videotape through the label and received a personal reply that he preferred that I not tape that particular show. Otherwise a lot of shows are taped for the label and they end up on Tzadik releases. I'm going to talk to Saft to see if I can do video and/or audio recording fro 5/17/08 cross your fingers folks!

that would be great. im also interested in Zorn's reasoning against recordings perhaps if I meet Zorn I can ask, but this is only part of what Jamie said to me..."yo dude, zorn is super against taping....." He let me know that he has no problem w/ stealth, I definitely won't be videotaping!

Hi Everyone I am going to be attending the Brooklyn/Philadelphia Zorn shows this weekend. I have been contemplating bringing my friend's taping equipment with me so that I can record the shows. I was wondering if anybody knew what Zorn's taping policy was. I sat next to a guy who was pretty blatantly taping the Bar Kokhba shows last December from the Balcony at the Abrons Arts Center, and I forgot to ask him whether he had asked for Zorn's permission to record the concert. I would really like to record the show, mostly just for personal enjoyment. But I would rather not record in "stealth" mode. I have several Zorn bootlegs from around the world, so I know that other's have taped many of his concerts in the past. I was just wondering if anybody had any first hand knowledge regarding Zorn's taping policy. Thanks in advance! did you get these shows?

^^^^^
The Brooklyn shows were my first time ever taping a show, so there were some missteps, and I was only able to record about 30 min of the dreamers set from Feb 29. But I got pretty much the entire 5 sets in Philly except for the last song of the Electric Masada set. They sound killer, but there is some digi-noise that I need to fix, before I make it available to others.
Its hard to believe that there was no one else that taped both of the Brooklyn shows, hopefully they will surface soon! And the Bar Kokbha shows from Dec 2007 as well, for that matter!!!!

It does make it more challenging when the show isn't "taper friendly" that will deter many that ordinarilly would, due to unwanted risks and possibly not even have recording equipment small enough to bring into a show....my last stealth experiences included recording Tomahawk to DAT up front in the crowd and a security shows up, bumps my arm that was holding mic in unique way and he looks and siezes my DAT, lets me keep deck....but that was one of the last....most of the bands I now like allow it, started taping in 88 and into mr bungle primus, peppers, buttholes, janes....now into Skerik, Mike Dillon, claypool and other punk rock influenced jazz freex

Zorn is against taping not because of loosing money but he wants to control what is released and what not. In the old days at the Knit Michael Dorf transmitted rehearsals over the web without Zorn´s permission and that was the initial split between Dorf and Zorn and the beginning of Knit´s demise...
