Hi Everyone
I am going to be attending the Brooklyn/Philadelphia Zorn shows this weekend. I have been contemplating bringing my friend's taping equipment with me so that I can record the shows. I was wondering if anybody knew what Zorn's taping policy was.
I sat next to a guy who was pretty blatantly taping the Bar Kokhba shows last December from the Balcony at the Abrons Arts Center, and I forgot to ask him whether he had asked for Zorn's permission to record the concert.
I would really like to record the show, mostly just for personal enjoyment. But I would rather not record in "stealth" mode. I have several Zorn bootlegs from around the world, so I know that other's have taped many of his concerts in the past.
I was just wondering if anybody had any first hand knowledge regarding Zorn's taping policy.
Thanks in advance!

A friend of mine has asked to tape JZ shows and was told no. And I heard the same thing from another taper...

For what it's worth, my friend told me a story about Zorn stopping a set at Tonic to bust a guy taping. I would be very careful....

Then what was up with the guy with the huge microphones in the center of the balcony for the Bar Kokhba shows, there's no way Zorn didn't see him........

Hmm... big mics, center balcony...Perhaps it was an official recording...? Maybe for the archives....maybe for release? Who knows?
I didn't see him (but then I didn't look up at the balcony). However, it is a known fact that Zorn does not have a taping policy (a la The Dead or Phish) other than NO TAPING.
If you still aren't sure, email Tzadik and see what they say.

I actually talked to the guy, I was sitting right next to him the 2nd night. He said he was from Portland, I got his e-mail, but I never got the shows.................hmmmmm.......maybe it was official. I guess I got some thinking to do. If anybody else has any info on taping policies for Zorn, feel free to reply!
Cheers!

Hey, little late replying to this one....
Zorn tends not to like taping from what I can tell-- he stopped the Masada Book II debut at Tonic to yell at some guy video taping the performance. OTOH, I've seen other people clearly record things and he leaves them be. Go figure.

I remember hearing a Masada String Trio boot from Poland or somewhere, where he refuses to begin the concert until all the photographers have been remvoed from the front of the stage....Maybe hes cool with the music being taped, but not with video / pictures being taken?

In my experience, it seems like Zorn goes wherever his mood takes him and he just expects people to follow!

I've requested permission from John to videotape through the label and received a personal reply that he preferred that I not tape that particular show. Otherwise a lot of shows are taped for the label and they end up on Tzadik releases.
