difficult question, I know my answer = Filmworks the best of the series is the collaboration with all the great and different musicians and the wide range from the music styles (btw, my wishes for the next year: better english knowledge)

Masada for me... maybe not his most varied/daring output but it's what I listen to the most, by far.

From what I've heard so far, its between Naked City, Chamber Music, and Music romance.
I shan't vote.

I had to go with what I know I love, which is Masada, but I will say that I'm pretty ignorant of other aspects of Zorn's music and am fully prepared to come back here in six months and say something different.

This is tough, cos I wouldnt be without any of his works.....But, if I had to choose, itd be Naked City. Thats where it started with me, and all their music still blows my mind....

it has to be the filmworks series indeed. I always think of this serie to be some kind of a laboratory for Zorn ; in this one we can hear almost anything Zorn did out there, condensed into 18 albums (19, soon enough).
But just behind are the composer pieces (for orchestras, chamber music...).

I have to go with Naked City... turned me around when I first heard it, and as much as I listen a lot more to Masada and the composed ("classical") stuff than Naked City these days, what a project. I mean, it's been about 20 years since that first record and STILL it sounds like it's 20 years ahead of its time.

I would have included his structured improvisations/game pieces on the poll too.

I just think also that the whole Masada thing has been....kinda, well, done to death. There are far too many releases out there, and variations thereto, and I really feel some are truly "clutching at straws", however good they may be....
Now, Im not saying I dislike any of the Masada / related albums, I just think that with the onset of the Book Of Angels series ( anyone know how many are planned? ), in my opinion, where is there left for the Masada thing to go?
Im glad The Dreamers is planned, because it sounds like its gonna be great. Im also very into the Moonchild / Astro / Helio albums.
The main thing is that Zorn is always pushing forward, so I guess in reality it doesnt matter how many Masada related records come out....

I share the same feelings about the whole Masada project. OK, it's clear it HAD to be done, it's great Zorn did it and some albums are true gems (At the mountains of madness, Asmodeus, Malphas, The Circle Maker, Xaphan without a doubt). But I have a hard time getting his obsession with it : I mean, it's the most persistent and recurring project among his entire output. Albeit varied it is, it sometimes sounds as if we've reach a limit. Even on tour, Zorn keeps playing with Masada all the time. Unless you're a new yorker so you're able to see him improvising at The Stone, we foreigners can only rely on Acoustic Masada, Masada String Trio, Bar Kokhba, and so on. This makes me think, Tzadik had announced, months ago, that Acoustic Masada was over, recording and touring. Well, what's up ? They're still performing gigs all around the world, and they will be playing in Paris next june (which I'll attend).
Regarding the supposed amount of volumes which will be released from the second Masada Book, I guess nobody can assume anything, but according to the man himself in an interview he gave about a year ago in a french jazz magazine, a third Masada book is already completed (!).

I would have included his structured improvisations/game pieces on the poll too. I can not modify the Poll, sorry. Maybe PappaWas can help in this case. Game Pieces = Cobra (or not?) I thought it is the same. Edit: now I see Cobra is not in the Poll-list, ouch, I missed that

I just think also that the whole Masada thing has been....kinda, well, done to death. Even as a new listener I can sympathise with this view. Zorn's got pretty good at writing Masada themes, but I'm beginning to think that he keeps writing them because he's good at doing it, rather than because they have become a major part of his musical expression. The fact that he has let other performers have the first stab at Book Two almost seems to indicate a lack of interest on his part. The problem is: you never know when Zorn will spit out another great album in the Masada project: Masada Guitars & Volac for example, are good enough to justify buying a few superfluous albums along the way. On balance I just think that the many great albums associated with the project are my favourites.
