Everyone should be sure to check this out. In my estimation, this is right up there with the Goldberg interview from a decade or so ago (http://bombsite.com/issues/80/articles/2501) as the best interview of John Zorn I've come across.

I wasn't that impressed with Terry Gross this time around, but mostly she got out of JZ's way and he said a lot of good stuff. Definitely worth a listen.
I liked the Q&A he did at the Walker better, in terms of recent interviews...

I liked the Q&A he did at the Walker better, in terms of recent interviews... I think it was more the subject matter she coaxed out of him-- I've never heard JZ talk about his upbringing or family really. It was a very different portrait. I don't think Ms. Gross was overly familiar with his music, and I think that may have been what resulted in the direction things steered. I could be full of it tho. :-)

I can't remember what interview it was (might have been the Walker) but I have definitely heard some stuff about his childhood before, he talked about "reparenting" himself and how he wanted to play the pipe organ since he was 8 years old but his parents wouldn't get him one But yes, this definitely had some interesting new biographical info. I did love the story about him getting left in the car... BTW, I posted this before but they updated and changed the link. All the WKCR stuff this month: www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/wkcr/story/zorn60-wkcr-september-2-2013-through-september-30-2013-updated-calendar (Don't be lazy and not click, JZ's going to be on the air for no less than thirteen hours this month! Great stuff! All streaming online.) I listened to his four-hour on-air appearance on Monday and it was WELL worth a listen. I really hope it was archived somewhere. Not just for the great stories, but he played three hours of rarities and unreleased stuff out of his personal archives. I was barely sentient that day thanks to migraine, throwing my back out, and the accompanying meds, so I didn't have the wherewithal to record it...
