Great stuff, thanks for the link! Yes, really great, thanks. Check it out around the 45+ minute mark for a couple year old opinion of Zorn's on what you've all been talking about.

There's no way to download the file, is there? My computer's in the shop and I'm stuck on an irritating little netbook... would love to burn it to a DVD or something...

Managed to watch the interview without my netbook catching on fire... ;-) What a great video, thanks for sharing that. It's sort of depressing to hear how much cash he kicks back to keep Tzadik and the Stone running. I really admire his dedication. Seems like an appropriate time to drop in this link: thestonenyc.com/support.html

Doesn't this bother anyone here? I mean, the blogger can put up a cute little note like this: "This blog does not promote piracy: my goal is actually to support the artists by making their works available to the major possible number of people. I think they really deserve a larger audience than now. If you liked any of the albums buy the original CD. Support the artists" But let's be realistic here, this is a pirate site, someone ripped the CDs without permission and is providing pirated material by artists who probably need all the royalties they can get. Maybe JZ is selling high volume of his recordings, but do you really think Chris Brown is? Or Mr. Dorgan? I can't see any way how this actually promotes the musicians in any positive manner. I suppose some folks will dl this stuff and then buy the albums, but I'm betting that's 1 in 20 of the folks who actually like the material. I mean, I've always been one for tape trading and things like that, but only the stuff you can't buy. This just rubs me the wrong way. Thoughts? I personnaly know some french people who are buying some records after d/l it. I think there two categories of people about Tzadik 1. People who are really Fans of Zorn and the Tzadik stuff, make a collection, etc...It's my choice personnaly. I think they really don't care about my blog and it's a good thing. 2. People who like the label, but with the very large catalog, doesn't really know what to choose, doesn' have the money to buy a lot of records, etc...This blog is for us. maybe some of them won't buy any records. But some of them will... If you're down with that, i understand. Don't go on my blog, buy all the tzadik, make you collection. That what i do ! (i own more than 500 tzadik releases) peace...

This sounds like a serious rationalization. I don't buy everything Tzadik puts out (I buy a lot of stuff Tzadik puts out) and certainly their catalog is voluminous, but does that give you the right to engage in piracy? Moreover, in doing what you're doing, I am certain you have some effect on the sales of Tzadik's music. Someone, somewhere is downloading from you rather than buying a CD or downloading from a legitimate music site. And regardless of someone you personally know "doing the right thing", someone is downloading music from you that they enjoy and is not buying it. But hey-- you've got your website, and if you feel good about taking sales away from Tzadik, taking royalties away from the musicians recording there, and potentially contributing to the drying up of anything unique and interesting in the music industry, I'm glad. As far as I'm concerned though, anyone who loves this music should be highly critical of you. What you're doing is wrong and is damaging to the bottom line of Tzadik and the financial earning abilities of all involved.

It sounds like you are failing to acknowledge the potential good things that downlaoding may do. Perhaps providing access to a greater number of people would also increase sales of the CDs? or result in more people paying to attend concert performances? People try to use the same rationale that you are using with respects to live concert recordings, and it just doesn't fly in the face of real data IMO. Sure, there are going to be some people who just download and don't buy later, but its far from the majority IMHO. There are several bands that allow live recordings and/or free downloads of their CDs, that have seen increased sales/revenue, not the other way around as you suggest. Wilco and Widespread Panic, just to name a couple........

You think so? I went to college during the beginning of the MP3 movement. I can tell you that I was far in the minority of people I know who were not stealing music. This has carried over into their adult life as well. You're also ignoring a critical distinction between a concert recording and a pirated recording. A pirated recording is a direct replacement for a legitimate one. FWIW, I've no issue with concert recordings because of said distinction. In addition, it's been well documented in politics that people are known to lie in polls about certain issues where they feel it will reflect badly on them, e.g. issues of discrimination. If this is the case, do you really think that asking questions about music downloading is any different? I'd love to see a reliable study out there on the effects of downloads, but it seems the only people doing these are (a) the music industry and (b) a bunch of non-academia geeks, both of whom have stakes in one POV and are as reliable as the tobacco companies on cigarettes. The only academic study I could find came from the ACM, which seemed to support my POV. Two points there: 1) The economy of Wilco's albums vs. touring revenues are way different than, say, Brown Wing Overdrive's. Put simply, small acts make no money (and in fact usually lose money) from touring. 2) If the band wants to allow circumvention of their copyright, being the legal copyright holder, that's their right, isn't it? And I guess this is where I have a hard time with things-- somebody owns that recording and depends on it for their livelihood. Would you go to a restaurant, eat dinner, and skip out without paying? ("Turns out I don't like French food, sorry!") Or would you walk into a book store and walk out with a book in your pocket before visiting the cash register? I don't fully understand why digital media makes people forget this. By the way, I think the major labels made their own bed with their price gouging habits in this one, don't get me wrong, but it seems in between the major label's price (ludicrous) and the consumer's desired price (free) there should be a happy medium. Anyway, I've hijacked this thread enough, if people want to continue talking about whether it's ok to circumvent copyrights through digital media, kick off a new thread, I'll happily contribute there.
