Anyone heard anything about a new release date for Xaphan? I've been waiting so eagerly and it seems to be postponed... Amazon had it as being released today and this morning it's showing up as shipping in 4-6 weeks...

I hope I can get it earlier in Switzerland. btw, hope I can see Secret Chiefs 3 live in Austria in November on the Unlimited Festival curated by Carla Kihlstedt www.waschaecht.at/content.php?gruppe=20&menue_id=118

I asked at my local store and (although it took two people to figure it out ) they said they had the release date as November 6. They are usually pretty useless at getting Tzadik stuff though... not sure how good their info would be. And my friend who owns a record store hasn't heard a thing... oh well. Maybe I will put it on my Chanukah list and my poor mother will have to track it down instead.

Just filling some gaps in my Zorn collection and picked up a half-price copy of "Rituals". Reminds me a lot of Zappa's classical pieces - wordless soprano vocals integrated with ever-shifting classical sounds. The usual Zorn motifs are there - bubbling sounds, bird calls and the wind machine. Not overly impressed but I'll be sure to listen again soon. Its also one of his shortest classical releases clocking in around the thirty minute mark.
On the other hand I picked up a compilation called "Vulgar Tongue" which has a lot of (mainly) Australian alternative bands and features a live recording of Phlegm with JZ in NYC from 1993. Over nine minutes of a very "Naked City-esque" blowout. This must be one of my rarest JZ purchases as it is not even listed in Patrice Roussell's discography - whoops it is... Patrice just mispelt Phlegm as Phelgm.

Rituals is one of my favourite Zorn albums. I think it will grow on you! Yeah, it is short, but alot of great albums are! It suits it, if you know what I mean? Just like Torture Garden and Cynical Hystrie Hour, if they were any longer, theyd lose some of their impact, IMO..... ...Phlegm with JZ sounds fucking amazing too!!!!

The last two discs that I bought that have actually arrived and been listened to are Taboo & Exile and The Bribe. Yesterday I ordered Cobra, MLM and IAO, together with Heliogabalus (with one eye on the possibility of getting to Paris for Zornfest). They'll probably arrive in the New Year what with the trip across the Atlantic.
One of the dilemmas with Zorn is should one buy "wide" or buying "deep". I've tended to sample areas of his repertoire rather than try to cover everything, just getting another album in the same area when I've exhausted the first.

Due to some complicated circumstances, I am wrapping some of my own holiday gifts today... I got a copy of Filmworks XI Of course I can't listen to it since I have to go wrap it and put "To Sarah, From Mom and Dad" on it...

IAO is especially one of my favourites. Next to to come for me are - The Cracow Klezmer Band : Balan: Book of Angels Vol.5 and Songs From The Hermetic Theatre
