Thank you very much for posting that. I have a good friend who was at that show and had to step out for a minute, and he was really annoyed that he missed that Zorn piece since he is a JZ fan. Now he can see it :-)

Looks like he'll be doing a residency at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC - every Wednesday in January.
Of course since it's midweek I probably can't go to any of them... but I'll be curious to see what the shows will be.

I liked that interview...
"If guitars could vote ... all guitars would vote to play surf music." "...because?" "'Cause that's what guitars like! That's what they do if you leave 'em alone..."

Loved the quote about surf music. I also love that he got another chance to use his quip about many American music audiences mistaking a guitar for a trumpet with regard to the difficulty of bending high notes. I first heard him make that joke in "The Lost String" and have loved it ever since.
If only Terry Gross would have pronounced "Postizos" correctly. Perhaps she can start a band of her own... Terry Gross y Los Interviewers Pozitsos.

I'd love to attend that panel. It'd be nice to just be in a room with that many people who actually know who Ayler was.
I continue to hold out hope that someday Ribot will discover Florida on a map and play here, particularly with Spiritual Unity, but I'd happily see him in any incarnation he'd bring.

As I've said before, they're New York Jews, at some point they will all retire there ;-)
If I can avoid blizzard-related cancellations, I'm heading down for the Sunship show this week. (Although I am still kind of peeved about the 12/26 blizzard that had me stranded in Manhattan for two nights, I can't complain too much since it let me see four improv sets at the Stone in addition to the New Years Eve shows I originally planned...)
If anyone's making travel plans, I'm also heading down to the Ceramic Dog show on 1/26, so expect another foot or two of snow in NYC around then... :-P

Yeah, I missed the Ribot 55th bday shows, so I suppose I could get a run of 65th bday shows when he retires to Florida. Very interested in your post-show thoughts on Sunship. Marc exploring Trane is a fascinating thing for me.

I did see them once before (at the 55th b-day shows) but it was one of their very earliest shows, if not the first, so I have a feeling this will be a better show (not that the first one was bad!). I am excited to see them again. I should have brought my taping stuff... just remembered I didn't pack it. If my boss forgets we have a lunch meeting scheduled I'll run home and grab it...
There's a nice recording of them from Willisau... I can point you to a copy if you haven't heard it.

Have not heard that Willisau show but would love to. Only Sunship I've heard to date is one video I'd found on YouTube. Thanks!

This is only sort of tangential Marc Ribot content, but he's so rarely on television I figured it was worth a mention. He played guitar last week for Tom Waits at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. They are televising portions of the ceremony on the FUSE TV channel here in the US at 9PM-11PM EST. So we might get to see a little Ribot on TV tonight...
