Nice pics, I love that one of Ches and Shahzad... very atmospheric (and kind of creepy). And I also mourn the loss of that handsome beard.
Thanks for the review! When I saw them last month it sounds like a similar setlist to what you got - Gainsbourg covers, the Doors cover, one other from the album, some new songs and a good bit of noise... I hope all these new songs mean they will record another album.

Ches was in top form as far as being odd and creepy. He was downing redbulls and that stare down had to have lasted a good minute or two. He's a lot of fun to watch. He and Shazad make and odd pair.

A quick Ribot related story, mostly for SarahV since I don't post on the tom waits board anymore for some reason. Someone gave me a free ticket to a french rap concert and I knew a couple girls that were going so I figured what the hell, I'll go. It was a very old and white audience and later in the show the band (guitar, upright bass, piano, accordion, dj, drums) started playing Tom Waits' Hoist That Rag when the hiphopist left the stage for a bit. The only highlight of the night for me, unfortunately it was such a watered down version that I was kind of embarrassed that they played it and that I recognized it. They removed all the grit from a song that IS grit.

Heh. A really large percentage of Waits covers get filed in the "why!? no really, WHY?" category for me... Hoist That Rag is a particularly bad one to cover - even forgetting about the unique Waitsiness of it, there's something like 2 minutes of guitar soloing that your typical cover band can't even hope to get close to...

I don't think I can make this, or the show on the 14th, but for someone in the area... this looks like a fun one:

Good news for the summer 2010 by Saudades:
MARC RIBOT y LOS POSTIZOS & FRIENDS Marc revives his legendary party band the Positzos and sits in with one of the hardest grooving Colombian ensemble out of NYC today. One of the ultimate New York City party bands, Marc Ribot & Los Cubanos Postizos (aka "The Prosthetic Cubans) became a must see attraction in the late 1990s, its feverishlycookingshows buildaround arrangements of Cuban bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez - innovator of the son montuno. Recently revived and now going by the the simplyfied name of Marc Ribot & Los Postizos opens the format to incorporate musical influences from across the Americas but with the same latin based fervor. In this special evening, Marc Ribot presents Los Postizos billed along with the hard-groove of roots-rock cumbia outfit La Cumiamba eNeYe.
YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS Where deco meets disco meets decon; with Jamaladeen Tacuma, G. Calvin Weston, Bern Nix, Marc Ribot and Anthony Coleman. 5 professional, harmolodic noise improvisers with an uncommon love of Phillysoul and hardgroove. Ladies and Gentlemen... the hardest working men in punk/funk/soul/noise: The Young Philadelphians!!!
xxxx
Btw, I have the new & sealed CD/DVD "Ultime Cosmos" by Lucien Dubuis Trio feat. Ribot from the debut concert. I sell it for 20$ (PayPal), when someone is interested. I will send it for free.
Greetings, Holger

Hopefully they will do some shows in the US (or at least NYC) as well as Europe, those are some very fun bands... saw all three (Young Phila., Cubanos & Cumbiamba Eneye) last year as part of the birthday celebration week he did. Amazing shows.

Ultime Cosmos is fantastic. I cannot get enough of this album. The extra DVD has some fun stuff as well. I love seeing Marc in the studio.
This will likely remain on uber-heavy rotation at least until the Dreamers' Book of Angelsalbum comes out next month.

Yes, the movie is really funny. As the opener for the ReleasePartyGig in Bern was the movie on a huge cinemascreen presented by the filmmakers themselfe as a world premiere. Great moments, especially the squirrel. ;D

The last date in Basel is only 4 miles away from my home, but I bought a ticket for the Baptista show (same day in Zürich).
Ribot is every year more than one time in Switzerland, so it was not a difficult choice.

I'd love to see any of those shows with Grimes and Taylor as it means the setlist is likely to include several Ayler tunes. I love Ayler's music and I love the way Marc interprets his work.
